So I was torquing down my injectors. The bit came out of my holder and fell down the rearmost pass oil return in the head. Sounded like it slid all the way down to the oil pan but fishing around for it I just can’t locate it. I’m thinking it landed on the upper oil pan plate.
would you drop the pan for it or just hope it works its way down to the bottom of the oil pan? I’m pretty sure the pickup has a trash screen.
I'd get a long flexible magnet and run it down the hole and see what you can find. If not, I'd drop the pan. Definitely don't want that bouncing around. Chances are you'll be fine, but I wouldn't want to risk it over a hundred bucks.
I had bent a small handless screwdriver into a J shape to pry out the glow plug connectors from the inside (valve cover off). It was workin great until I dropped it into the oil return on the back of the passenger side head. I wanted someone to say it would be ok but nobody here would say it, lol. As bad as I hated it, I dropped the pan and the tool was in the bottom. It wasn’t that hard except getting the engine lifted off the mounts if you are 4wd. The front axle is right in the way for lifting at the crankshaft balancer. In the end I cut some wood scrap “just so” and managed to get it high enough. Anyway, it would have bothered me to leave it and you are probably the same way. You’ll hear a little rattle every time you crank it and wonder if this is it.
The rocker box edge blocks the return hole. Otherwise I’d peek down there with a Boroscope. I couldn’t find it with anything so my assumption is it’s sitting on a windage tray or upper oil pan.
There a lot of open in that upper pad, but I know with my luck. If you drain all the oil out and smack the bottom of the oil pan you might be able to hear it bounce. The drain hole has a post for the threads so if it’s down in that area you can’t get it out by hunting through the drain hole. Could be on top of the pickup too.
