lost T40

Can any one tell Me Iwf the oil galley in#8 cyl is a straight shot to the oil pan or the windage tray. The reason I'm asking that's where the t40 went during a injector change.all so can the oil pan be taken off with motor in the truck. Thanks for any help

Hopefully it's down in the pan. There's a post by M-Chan68 in that link (post #11) that describes how to get the pan off. You have to lift the engine a little for clearance.

Before I went threw all that work I would try a scope first or at least a magnet from top and bottom.

Can you get it out the drain hole?

If you can scope it, and move it near the drain hole with a magnet... you are probably not far.

Bigger question:

Does it do a lot of harm if it stayed in the pan?

I would think it's too big to pass through the pick-up screen in the pan...yet small enough to no block the flow of oil to said tube. I could be completely wrong thou....

This reminds me of when a buddy and I overhauled a 302 about 10 years ago. Got the engine back into the car and filled up all the fuilds getting ready to start it up. We went to prime the oil pump by spinning the oil pump via the distributor opening (there are a couple of tools that are designed for this). We couldn't find the one we needed...so we improvised with a 1/4" socket on the end of a 12" extension. Everything worked like a dream until we tried to pull the socket/extension out of the distributor whole. The extension came out...the socket didn't. Needless to say it took a count-less number of tries with magnets, grabbers and a couple of custom built tools trying to keep from opening the engine back up. I know we eventually got the socket out without opening the engine back up. It was about that time a 2nd buddy walked up and pointed out where the oil pump drive extension was that we had looked for in the beginning

If I am going into the oil pan, I would replace the oil pan (if rusted), and also... replace pick up, screen, and if I can get to the oil pump, that too.

X2 Might as well do that while you're there.

Oil pump is on the crank. And it is never good to have anything loose inside the engine.
