Hi guys. I want to switch to a Holley 2 bbl from my Motorcraft 2 bbl on a 400 (want to see if I can up the MPG a bit). Seems like the Holley 2300 series is the most popular. Would I find one of these at a wrecker on an old 350 GM engine? How do I identify one? and do I need an adapter plate or does it bolt right on? Thanks for any info.
The only benefit the Holley 2300 offers over the Motorcraft 2150 is more airflow capacity, which is an advantage only at higher rpm. But if you want to improve mpg, perhaps you should look for ways to reduce engine rpm. Fuel consumption is roughly proportional to engine speed.
Is your engine totally stock, including all emissions control devices, or is it modified (and how)? Have you checked and adjusted your engine's tuning and your carb tuning to optimize mpg with your current carb? What have you done so far to improve mpg, and has it worked?
How do you drive the vehicle, and what do you use it for? Heavy loads and towing are not conducive to high mpg. Also, your right foot is one of the biggest influences on mpg.
If your carb is neglected (i.e., dirty and out of adjustment), you may get an immediate improvement by replacing it with a Holley 2300 2V. But you might also get the same improvement (or more) for about 1/4 the cost of a new Holley by just rebuilding and cleaning up your current carb.
The Holley 2300 will bolt right onto your manifold in place of the Motorcraft 2150.
I don't know of any vehicles that came with the 2300 from the factory, but I doubt any ever did because none of the 2300 carbs are emissions legal.
