Im lookin for a good carb i want alot of power and decent mpg i have a new rebuilt 400 with the 2 barrel that was on my stock 400 that was on it any suggestions?
well first off do you want a 2 or 4bl. if it's a 2bl holley does make them. if you want a 4bl go with a Edelbrock 600 or 650 vac sec. i never owned one until i bought my latest truck, it came with it. they are VERY easy to work on. it's only a 2 piece body and holley is a 6 piece. more chance's to leak.
as for good gas milage with a 400. if you get 10mpg your doing good. these motors just dont get good milage. you can get good HP out of them though. if you want both you should of went with a EFI 460. i talked to a guy who owns a auto shop and he hada 79 Bronco with a EFI 460 that got 19mpg in the city and 22 on the highway. and PLENTY of power. what cam did you put in your motor? i have a Crower RV cam in my 400 and it makes great power. i can break the rear tires lose between 1st and 2nd and i DONT have a shift kit in it. and my truck weigh's about 7000 pounds.
All,
I've found that a quick upgrade from the Motorcraft 2 barrel is the Holley 2300 series two-barrel. If you need more top end put a few spacers in. If it dies off the light pull some spacers out.
Buy a holley book and you can do just about anything you want with it.

I second the holley 2bbl vote. I swapped out my stock motorcraft for a 2300 series holley and have never looked back. Can't say its made a dramatic mpg difference, but just smooth reliable power. Feels like it woke up a few ponies along the way.
If the 4bbl is something you must have, Definatley go for the edelbrock style carb, just for ease of tuning, maintenence, etc. And keeping with your quest for mpg, vaccume 2nds.
my uncle has a edelbrock 4 barrel 650 and i have that exact same motor as him and he get 15 mpg i was just gona ask on here before i go and buy somthin ill look into that 2 barrel holley cause i duno if i want to go and buy a intake hehe
if u want a 4 bbl. and mileage, go with an edelbrock 600. if u want real power with a 4 bbl., go with an edelbrock 750 or 800. dont let people talk u out of going with the bigger carb. a 400 can use the cfm.
