The original Ronald McDonald first apeared in the Washington, DC, area, and was created (and performed) by none other than Willard Scott, the "Today" show weather guy.
Is it just me, or does the current Ronald McDonald look less like a clown, and more like a drag queen? That hair and makeup is getting pretty strange...........
We got a remodeled McDonalds here and they have this big Ronald balloon out front. It's huge. I think it's there to scare the kids away because it gives even me the creeps. Weird beety eyes and flaming red hair. Ugh.
I don't know if you have any of these around Utica, but you should check out the Mcdonalds they built in Baldwinsville (NW of Syracuse). It's just like the McDonalds from the 50's, huge golden arches and all. The neat part are the "display pads" they have set up for old cars around the restaurant.
They replaced Ronald with another actor this past year. They were really sneaky. Basically pull all the commercials that actual had him in them and went for about two months with commercials without him in them. Suddenly he reappears and looks slightly different. Most people never noticed.
Hey, Pancake-

A couple years ago, they replaced the McDonald's on North Genesee St. with one of the "retro" ones. I was only in there once but it was pretty neat. They had a 1930's hotrod on the front lawn (can't remember what it was, though).
