Getting ready to do the flush and Dorman cooler just wondering what ATF you guys are running? Is it worth ponying up for Redline or Amsoil or just do something like the Mercon V Valvoline?
I just did my flush and 6.0 cooler upgrade (Dorman) last month and used Motorcraft Merton V, get a few extra quarts and chageout the power steering fluid while there.
No reason to spend money on a racing ATF in your Ex, I run Napa in mine and I get Amsoil for free.
( amsoil is good stuff but I save it for the race car that is going to see elevate heat level )
Yep, I just removed the return side hose off my PS cooler, drained partially refilled, drained and refilled all the way and then cycled the wheels back and forth a few times to purge the system. The old fluid from both trans and PS were darker than new (obviously....) but neither was burnt looking or smelling and they were both past due with the trans having seen a bunch (37K) of heavy towing miles.
So far t looks like a 10/15* reduction in trans temp while towing with the new 6.0 cooler in place.
Power Steering is the same fluid? (never knew that)
Not as a general rule, but a lot of vehicles use ATF in the Power Steering system.
I'm a little confused about the Mercon V recommendations... my owners manual (01 5.4) says just Mercon, and I've always read not to mix Mercon and Mercon V, or is that all bunk?

Mercon is a brand and copyrighted formula that Ford Owns. They stopped making Mercon several years ago and no longer lease the rights to anyone else to make it. Anyone that says they make a Mercon fluid means they say it is like Mercon, but Ford has not approved or tested it for quality.
Ford sent out notices and TSB's that Mercon V is the new specification to replace Mercon for any year Ford that specified Mercon.
Just use Mercon V.
However Mercon is still the specification for the transfer case in the 4X4 Excursions. For that you need to purchase Ford transfer case fluid which is basically mercon under a different label. DO NOT use Mercon V in the transfer case. It will cause damage according to Ford.

ooooookay, that makes sense. I should probably do a flush sooner rather than later, based on the shade of the crap that came out when I replaced a blown out line.

Ford superseded the Mercon when they had Mercon V reformulated and it is now the proper trans fluid for the 4R100.
Ford really should have just renamed Mercon to Mercon 2.0 to avoid the confusion this caused (and is still causing) when they issued the TSB back in 2006, changing the fluid. Yup, they changed this 12 years ago.
Schaeffer All Trans synthetic, with valvoline transfer case synthetic that covered the Ford XL12 lube spec,
I got the 6x1Gal box of Schaffer from amazon and it was just enough to do both the transmission + running flush as in the how to thread around here and enough for the steering/hydroboost also.
Dont forget an appropriate shaped funnel since the transmission dipstick is nearly horizontal.
