Sync 2 to sync 3 upgrade

Hey guys I'm looking at upgrading my 15 f150 to sync 3 from sync 2 I'm wondering if most or all of the sync 3 8 in units are the same as far as wiring goes.

Check out the 4dtech.com website. There you can have all of your questions answered.

My 2017 F-150 has the APIM’ issue as well since late November, still waiting on the part to come in to fix it. Hopefully, it will be here at the end of this month. The workaround for me is Apple Play.

My daughter and I did her truck a few years ago The swap was easy. The hardest part was changing out the USB module. Not a lot of extra slack in the wiring harness.
She bought her stuff here.

I’m looking to do the same. I found both 4D Tech and Infotainment. Wondering what folks experience is with both of them and if there is anyone else that sells the kit. On the 4D Tech site they mention to upgrade the O/S you need to go to their site and download the upgrade to a usb stick. I believe Ford WiFi enabled SYNC 3 upgrades. Wondering if you have to get it from them or if you can download from Ford. I sent them a list of questions.

Both seem to be similarly priced. 4D allows you to buy the upgrade without navigation using the Waze or Google Maps app for navigation. I’ll probably spend the $600.00 and get the Nav System.

Not sure about updates. I did like the fact that the 4D site gives you a pigtail with the connectors for the USB module. That was a pain to do with out that on my daughters truck.

I went with 4D. I did speak with them about the updates, the thing is fully supported by Ford, you can download the updates from Ford via WiFi or you can download them from 4D's site which they told me they do as a convenience for their customers. They also mentioned that if you sign up for their newsletter they will let you know when an update is available. These guys were super nice and very knowledgeable. The person I spoke to upgraded his 150. Nice to know that the folks you're dealing with use their own products. I spent the $15.00 on the "Trim Removal Tools", hope they help, everytime I mess with plastic trim I always break a plastic tab. Also laid down the extra $600.00 for the NAV system. The truck has it now, probably will never sell the thing but who knows. Also worried that Waze or Google Maps will go by the wayside. Made my living with technology, seen 100s of companies go under, Ford has been around for 100 years, probably be until I go under.

You`re worried about Google Maps, Waze, or even Apple Maps going by the wayside?

Yes, Ford has been around for over 100 years but Ford has "NEVER" provided their own navigation/mapping services. They rely on an outside vendor and maps updates cost $149.00. Also, the most up to date Ford navigation dates back to 2015 maps.

Don`t get me wrong because I use and like the factory navigation and it has never lead me wrong but, compared to the navigation/mapping services you mentioned that can be used via Apple CarPlay or Android Auto within the SYNC 3 system, not to mention being constantly updated, the factory navigation is not even in the same league.

I tend to agree. Ford is not unique in providing outdated and expensive nav maps. Pretty much no car company does a good job in this regard. It is not their core competency. The smart phone mapping apps are updated almost monthly (and sometimes more often), and they come with the phones for generally no charge. If they stop doing this, someone else will pick up the slack. There are billions of smart phone users; it is an enormous market.
