5.0L Swap

Due to some very ham-handed repair work by one of the past owners of my '87 F150, I'm now in the process of swapping out the 4.9L 4 speed for a '92 - '93 5.0L 5 speed. Now before the inline/V8 arguments get started, please keep in mind that I was given an offer that I simply couldn't refuse.

What I have is the complete (and I mean everything) harness and computer from the donor truck and I'm torn about the easiest way to make it work in my older truck. I'm torn between completely removing my old under hood harness and replacing it with the donor or carefully removing the EEC-IV wiring and patching that into the existing harness in order to get the engine running.

I also have the option of installing a 4 barrel intake and Duraspark ignition and going old-school, but I might have to figure out how to adjust the fuel delivery system and make sure the tach and engine gauges are functioning afterwards.

Either way, I have some work ahead of me and any helpful insight anyone may have is appreciated.

After studying the wiring schematics for both vehicles, it appears that it may be easiest to dissect the engine control wiring out of the donor harness and try to make a stand-alone harness. I can then remove the engine harness from the '87 and then fit the donor harness in its place.

After a number of wrinkles to be ironed out, I believe I should be ready to drop the engine in tomorrow...

Bracket that took forever to find at a scrapyard willing to torch the rivets.

Brackets installed and ready for action.

One ugly wiring harness...

A little paint...

Looking a little spiffier...

Well, time to quit talking to myself and get back to work.

If your donor harness came from a truck with the E4OD or 4R70w then there will be a lot more wiring in it that you don't need so I'd agree it'll be tidier in the end if you just pull what you need from it. Lookin good so far.

Donor was a manual, but much newer which made just swapping the under hood harness out of the question.

Been busy this evening installing a speedometer drive gear and the proper output shaft housing on the M5R2 and prepping the engine for installation

The header is on as a mock-up to test the dipstick support. It's coming back off when the engine goes in.

Quick update - It lives! Bwahahaha!

The base timing and possibly the firing order is off, but it fired up without any drama.
