I am new to the board, just picked up a black 2003 7.3 Limited with around 148K miles. She is BY FAR the best SUV I have owned (previous SUV's include Expedition, Escalade ESV, Explorer and others) and she is in amazing condition with the exception of her underbody. She has a medium amount of rust . I want to get at least 10 years out of her - anyone have any recommendations for a body shop that can take care of underbody rust in northern NJ area?
There's plenty of shops that will spray an undercoating on, which is the best solution in preservation. Get rid of the rust first, then undercoat. Most places should do everything for you though.
Thanks Jesse and Jay! I'll try to get pix a bit later today, I just installed new Westin side steps (lighted) and need to take a break for a few minutes. I have heard bad feedback from Zeibart and that undercoating without proper prep is a horrible idea (rust continues and accelerates without proper prep). Any tips on how to identify a "good" place vs. a "Bad" place to take her?
"Bad" places tend to not stay in business to long. As with most things you get what you pay for. Just talk to the guy, if he seems like he knows his stuff and is friendly and will take hte time to explain it to you, i'd go with that guy.
For a long term rust plan I would have any perforated areas cut out and repaired, the balance neutralized and then sealed/encapsulated and then the entire rig's undercarriage coated.
Personally I have no perforation on my EX and am slowly working one area at a time to clean it and coat with Chassis Saver paint (Silver Aluminum base and Gloss Black top coat). I do use Fluid Film coating on some of our other vehicles to protect them from the Winter road salt but I try to keep the EX salt free. However that plan has suffered the past two Spring trips with both seeing snow & ice and plenty of salty & briney roads, it got a very good belly wash down after each of those adventures.
