6.7 emissions reliability

I’ve owned 3 diesel trucks in the past but none of them had dpf or def. I purchased a 2016 f350 with a 6.2 gas and 4.30 gears 3 years ago. I went the gas route because all the talks aboutf regens and limp modes, hpfp, and sensors crapping out scared the hell out of me. I know they are covered under warranty but my primary use for this truck is to tow my 14,000# fifthwheel. I want to camp in campgrounds and not in dealerships back lots. With that said, I’m bored with the gas engine and I’m thinking about trading back to diesel. While the gas does the job, it’s performance is less than stellar and getting gas with a 38’ fifthwheel in tow can be a chore. So, are there modern diesels as bad the the forums make them sound. I just want a reliable tow beast. I will not be deleting it because my state does emissions testing on diesel. I also have no problem being extra vigilant with filter changes, etc.
any input would be appreciated.

My 2005 6.0L was in the shop a lot for all the usual suspects. My 2011 6.7L was in a few times, last time being to replace EGT sensor. My 2016 has never been in the shop and is now 2.5 years old and has more than 50K miles. I say go for it. As with any diesel, you gotta drive them. If your getting groceries most of the time, and towing once in awhile, then it may not be the right fit for you.

I don’t drive my truck everyday because I have a commuter vehicle. If I did, my commuter is 26 miles each way. I have only put 4,000 miles on my truck in the last year.

My take on the current version of the 6.7L is that it is a well built reliable engine. While it is undeniably a towing beast, it is also somewhat fragile in that “simple” mistakes can cost big time. Guard against water intrusion and don’t scrimp on maintenance and it will treat you right.
I average 10,000 miles a month towing campers and haven’t had the first problem.

The number of folks posting on the Internet about problems with their trucks is infinitesimal to those that have no problems at all and it can mislead one into thinking there are a mountain of problems when there is not. I may be lucky but I am on my 6 th. Ford pickup since 1972 and have never had one in the shop. I am **** about fluid and filter changes and still do them myself.

People come to the forum to complain. Most don’t post because they are having no problems.

2015 Powerstroke with over 50K and no problems. I do use Opti-Lube Summer Plus for lubricity and cetane boost and either Enerburn or BetterDiesel FBC for superior soot reduction which should lead to longer DPF life as it has dramatically reduced regenerations.

I would venture to say that the 6.7 PSD has been the most reliable of the "big 3" since the onset of the DEF era. The early model 6.7s liked to clog the EGR coolers. Probably the biggest emissions related issues they had. The coolers can be taken apart and cleaned fairly easy. Having said that, they are still miles ahead "reliability" wise from the 6.0 and 6.4 emissions setups.

I would trade in a heartbeat.I was set on gas and drove a couple.I thought they were ok but in the back of my head I knew I wasn’t gonna be happy.Half the reason I looked at them was I was in your shoes...Afraid of the emissions on them.

I now have a 17 6.7 in the driveway and I absolutely love that truck. You would never know It had DPF and DEF.Its really a non issue.I had two 6.0’s That never gave me any trouble and talk about worry.A lot of bad stuff on the internet about them.I don’t worry at all about my 6.7.

It seems to be the key is to work it HARD and don't skimp on maintenance.

These 2 posts pretty much sum up my thoughts as well. There are hundreds of thousands of 6.7s in the world. Most people come to the internet when they experience a problem. Also keep in mind how many of the problems you read about are "self inflicted". I've owned my 2013 for 3 years now, when I 1st got it I had the dreaded DEF issues. Ford replaced everything with the DEF system soup - nuts under the emissions warranty (not everyone's experience). Have not had any kind of an issue since. I bought my truck used and suspect my issues were due to neglect by the previous owner. Perform maintenance as recommended in the manual and you shouldn't have any issues. That said, some year 6.7s have weaknesses, you may want to proactively address some of those weaknesses - for one, the cold side intercooler pipe. These things are beasts, I tow a 22' enclosed trailer with a 2003 Thunderbird in it. I have to constantly remind myself that the trailer is attached. Don't let the emissions stuff scare you off - go for it, you won't be disappointed.

Only 14K miles on my '17 F-350 DRW and it's been great so far with no problems. Just keep up with the oil and filter changes and the 6.7 will treat you right. Bought mine to tow a 16K pound 5th wheel.

I currently have a 2016 F350 with 57,500 miles on it, no emissions issues to date. My previous truck was a 2013 F250 that has 67,000 on it when I traded for the F350, I had three of four Exhaust Gas Temperature probes replaced under warranty, one at 24,000 miles and two at 42,000 miles, no other problems with emissions or anything else on either truck.

I have a 15 and I have towed my 5th wheel everywhere with my truck. So far i have towed my trailer over 30,000 miles. I have just about 60,000 milers on the truck. Not one issue with the truck or it's emissions systems on the truck. My trailer only weighs in at 13,000 loaded and i have been coast to coast twice. Have done oil changes on both trips at ford dealerships.
Get the 6.7 and you will be very happy..
