The last picture is exactly what I had to do. I had pressure on like that and then hit it with a mini sledge. That shock then popped it loose.

Your press is too small. Superdutys need a larger press. One with a deeper cup for bottom side and a cup on top that engages the top of ball joint instead of the threaded part.

I highly recommend a cheap butane torch to heat the steel around the ball joint.....with press installed applying pressure. If your lucky it will pop out.

in your case it's much harder because the taper bushing is in the way. I suggest using a tapered punch to expand bushing.....this may let old ball joint to come out easier

Just a thought.

I wouldnt hit it if youre heating it. Just keep pressure on it with the tool and heat it. Beating the crap out of it will distort the knuckle and cause other issues. Just heat the knuckle slowly and evenly and it will pop.

Once your ball joint is out the work really starts.

The tapered bushing the ball joint goes into needs to come out too. Than all surfaces need shined up.

Getting that bushing out will be harder than getting that ball joint out.

I used a small bottle jack on mine and when it popped up and out it sounded like a rifle shot.

This thread reminds me...one of the problems with the scissor style is that you better find a way to wire it so that when the ball joint pops, it doesn't seriously hurt you. Normal press style won't fly like the scissor style. Ask me how I know. Some come with a safety strap.

So what I did when I got home from work is heat it for 45 min with propane. Then put the press back on with a 6 foot extension. Then I put on safety googles and hid behind the tire and torqued and torqued. Then BOOM

What is scissor style?
I have the harbor freight 12 ton press and I get really scared by how much pressure I can put on stuff.

I need to make a safety cage.

I’ve been near a harbor freight Ball joint press when it exploded, Equivalent to a shot gun going off next to your head.

other posted pics of tie rod end pullers but none of them are anywhere close to suitable for your ball joints.

personally I refuse to use any BJ puller other then the ones from Snap-on, you are right to be afraid of them.
