E350 Ignition Wiring

Still working on my 1988 E350 motorhome with 460 EFI engine. Will replace the faulty ignition switch tomorrow, old switch will not crank the motor and I have to jump the solenoid manually to do that. The old switch also seems to be stuck in the "ignition on" position too as all I have to do is jump the solenoid to get it running. Turning the ignition switch with the key does absolutely nothing. This probably explains the substantial arc I get at the pos battery terminal when connecting the bat cable even with the ignition switch turned off. Current going through the pos cable seems to be around 15 amps with everything shut off. Not good.

Subford attached some great wiring diagrams for this vehicle on my earlier posting regarding solenoid problems. The most useful one showed the green lead attaching to the pos solenoid terminal which supplied voltage to the alternator and accessories via the fuse block. But it did not show how the ignition wiring fits into the whole picture.

I am hoping that Subford or someone else can provide a schematic showing the power distribution from the solenoid pos including the ignition circuit. Thanks in advance.

Randy

Sounds more like you have a problem with the key tumbler or column linkage and NOT the Ignition switch.

Thinking 460 (7.5L) engine.

agreed. to test the switch, drop it off the column and work it with a screwdriver. if the ignition works properly, your issue in in the column.

There seams to be differences between the the EVTM diagram and the Ford master fold out diagram.
The Ford master fold out diagram is below.
Just click on it twice to read it.

Thanks for the diagrams Subford. Those will really help if I have to dig into this further.

The key mechanism on the steering column seems to work fine. Now to check if the actuation rod is doing what it is supposed to do. It looks like the steering column was lowered once for repair by the PO so I will check the rod out. It may be bent or something.

Happy 4th!

I have a 1986 E350 motorhome and I just replaced the solenoid but when I go to start it it's like the starter continues to turn how do I fix that issue like I don't know too much I'm learning as I go but it's I'm stuck on the side of the road for like a month now and I really need to get it fixed I've been trying everything I can but I don't know how to fix that issue I replaced the starter solenoid I checked all the wire in I took the key barrel out and fix that it used to stick and it doesn't stick now but don't know if that's the issue anyway I'm able to help me figure this out please
