I have a 79 F100 with the 302. The block is cracked (leaks water) at the top left (driver's side) water pump bolt. Is it possible to use a heli-coil to repair this problem? Looks like someone tried to install the wrong size bolt, and cracked the block. Any suggestions would be helpful. Thanks.
If the engine was apart, easy answer... find a new block. They are plentiful and iron block repairs are time consuming and uncertain durability. You probably are not looking to pull the engine right now so may be worth a try fixing it in place.
The classic crack repair starts with drilling a small hole at or slightly beyond the root of the crack to stop spreading. Then weld or otherwise seal it. Depending on where the crack is you may be able to repair by 1) drill the crack root 2) heli coil threads 3) clean crack area to iron and seal with JB weld. If you do helicoil it, thread locker on the helicoil will help seal it up.
Depending how long the crack is you can try a Big Sert from Time Sert, it is a thick walled insert, they work well, Keenserts are also a thick walled insert but I would use a Big Sert.
The problem with the crack is unless you drill it at the end and weld it it will continue to spread. How about some pics? Also look into lock stitch. I believe that's what it is called.
This is my opinion only but...To fix a crack in a block you should consider pulling the engine and replacing the block. Sucks but its the best way.
I have had some cast iron parts welded, and they worked but they were not engine blocks.
Anything other repair would just be a band-aid...which might get you by for awhile.
