At 237k I lost my overdrive. Rpms race once it is ready for overdrive gear. I switch O/D off and I can continue driving without it. So I am not totally disabled but high revving highway miles are going to cost me a bunch more gas. Any chance this can be a quick electronic fix?
OK, figured as such. Am I safe to drive long distances or is this a sign I'm going to lose everything? I imagine to fix this I need to get the trans out for rebuild, right?
No, you will have to drop transmission pan and valve body. Find pieces of snap ring, ensure the servo is connected, replace snap ring and put it all back together. Not to bad, I had to do it to mine too. There is a walk through somewhere on there, will have to see if I can find it..... Good time to change fluid and filter....
Before you put it all back together, make sure the OD servo didn't "unhook" itself inside the transmission. You can reconnect it while the valve body is out, kind of a pain, but not to bad.
Excellent video! Thanks a lot for that. Now I wish I had put this up a day earlier. I may have been able to get it fixed for my trip. Will try to repair it when I arrive at my brothers place.
Well, I have taken out the valve body, found the broken snap ring, replaced it, checked for loose pieces and test drove. No change. What did I miss? The servos? The ones beneath the valve body seemed fine. Not sure if the overdrive servo is in the same place?
Not to say you did all that work for nothing, but my overdrive doesn't engage sometimes (12 year old truck with 197k+ on it). I simply "lightly bump" the shifter (floor console shifter) toward the front of the truck and it engages. Happened twice in about a year and a half span.
Did you make sure all of the pieces are out of the valvebody? Does the valve move freely? Did the od servo come out of the case? Are all of the pieces of the snap ring accounted for?
I’m afraid I was not careful enough finding all the pieces. That’s why I put up the picture. I think I was focusing on the wrong area vs. the entire valve body. I’m going to remove it again tomorrow.
Yes, look for ALL of the c-clip. There will be a piece of it in the valve body.
Also, make sure the OD servo is properly placed against the OD band. I was looking for a video which showed the trans in the vehicle, but this one should give you a idea of what I am talking about here....

If you servo, dropped down any, there is a good chance the servo isn't pushing the OD band anymore. Need to connect it.
Thanks for this! My servo did come all the way out. I was wondering about this as it was mentioned above. So I should have that tool available and should remove the servo again? Is there a way to tell if the band is engaged? Or if I find a piece of scrap in the valve body, that confirms the fault?
It could be both if the servo came out. Try to find a hole in the case that allows a screwdriver to push on the band when you reinstall the servo.
ok, but how can you be sure it is pushed up enough? I had to use a jack to press the servo deep enough to hold in place while installing they snap ring.
There is a opening in the case that you can see the band, when the servo is out you will have to use a pick or something to catch the band through the servo bore and hold it tight against the drum. Then through the opening in the case you use a screwdriver to hold the band in place so you can let go of it through the servo bore and install the servo piston. You can make sure you have engaged the band by pushing up on the servo, you should be able to see the band move.
