How are we all doing? I have a question! My dad found a 1996 Ford F600 or F700 that used to be a box truck. It has the 429 gas engine in it. The owner bought from his fathers estate when he passed. THe interior looks rather new inside it still. It had a 26ft box on it.
What I am wondering is 2 things. 1.) Is the truck an F600 or is it really an F700? 2.) Can anyone speak to what the 429 gas engine is like? The mileage on the truck 169,000. THe thought is to cut it down 8 or 9ft and put a flat bed on it. The tires on it are 22.5”
Ha! Welcome to the club Ben. I used to drive an F700 for the tire shop I worked for, hauling scrap tires from Northern VA to Lynchburg. It was a 1993 model - 24ft box ex-Ryder truck. The only way to know what model it is for sure is to post up the VIN and let someone decode it or use the VIN decoder on this site. As to the 7.0L, I can tell you it did everything I asked of it without protest. It also didn't have much maintenance done to it when I wasn't working there. It was really doggy loaded down with the auto trans and I only got 4 mpg town and maybe 6 on the highway. It had almost 300K on the ticker though. I think a flatbed would be a fine idea.
And also - might be worth trying the Large Truck forum for better results - they're the medium duty experts as most people here have 1-ton and smaller trucks. Large Truck Forum
All I can say is the 429 is just a de-stroked 460. They have been around forever, have a good aftermarket support, and will make all the power you can afford. I wasn't aware they still produced 429s after the 70s lol.
