f600 buy?

Hey guys, I know this section isn't for this type of truck specifically but seemed to be the best bet. Anyways, i'm looking into buying a 1991 f600, I've been needing something with more seats just to drive friends around and also am in need of a much bigger truck because I frequently go to mud bogs and I usually need to tow my mud truck, atv's and side by sides out there so I am always borrowing friends trucks that have a little more power than my f150!

I just want to know some general specs on this truck if anyone knows. Things like engine size, fuel consumption (i know it ain't no civic! ), reliability (is there any problem areas on these trucks). I live in Canada and have found this one that is within driving distance:

Ford F600 Monster Truck - Toronto (GTA) Cars For Sale - Kijiji Toronto (GTA) Canada.

Any thoughts on it? Thanks for the help!

Engine size: It says "big block gas". A '91 would have had either a 370 or 429 "Lima" truck engine, related to the 429/460 "385" series car and light truck engines. Expect 5 to 10 mpg. Reliability is driven more by condition and maintenance at this point. As new, they were fine engines with no glaring problems.

Note this one needs brakes. I take it from you line of questioning that you are not equipped tool or experience wise to do medium duty brakes. Expect up to $1000 or more for a brake job.

I would look for a later model F350 Crew dually, but then that would be with your money, not mine.

could have a 429 or a 370 engine ! you guys must be skinny as a fence post to be able to put 8 people in that thing ! and 5 ton , that's probably close to what it weighs ! some one put a pick up box on it , looks nice in the pictures , but you need to get some more info sence you are up and close to it ! the VIN # would help !they were pretty good ole trucks but they loved to eat gas ( 5 mpg ? ) and depending on what gears in the rear could mean slow top speed !

cj06 makes a good point--an F600 is not a "5 ton" rated truck. The usual GVWR is somewhere around 16000 lbs, maybe a bit more. My dad had his '58 licensed to 24000 iirc, not sure how he pulled that off and it's too late to discuss it with him now....

Yea I'm going to try and get out there in the next week or so to check it out a little more. As for the brakes, I have done a few full brake jobs on f-150's and f-350's as well as a few cars, and I have a full shop with all the tools i'll need. Or do these come with air brakes? Because then i'm SOL! Also would it still only have 5 or 6 gears in it or will it be like a tractor trailer with 10 or whatever they have?

The ad says manual trans. AFAIK that would be a 5 speed for that year truck. Probably with 5th overdrive. A two speed axle would have been available, but since the ad does not mention it, who knows. The ad says F550 and F600, so who knows what it really is. The wheels look like F600 stuff to me.

This should not have air brakes, but the rear axle brakes, hub etc is quite a mankiller if you happen to tip the duals over on yourself, or if you don't have a 1" drive impact wrench* to take the lugs off.

*requires industrial compressor.

I'd personally try to find a truck without those Dayton wheels. What a PITA they are to get true.

I talked to the guy and said the brake problem is just a torn line at the back, so that should be an easy fix. I'm going to check it out next week so i'll see how that goes. And I do have an impact wrench but i guess i'd have to buy a 1" socket for it. What do they torque those to? My compressor will go up to 110 psi, would that be enough to get them off/on?

It's not the pressure, its the massive volume the air gun needs. A 3/4" hose with a 20 gal air tank will zap em off great.
Thinking about it, if it's just a simple brake hose, why wouldnt the guy selling it just replace it to cover the liability of no brakes? Knock down the price unless he fixes it.

Oh ok, and yea I know, unless he just doesn't know how to change a brake line! I will try and get him down on the price if I decide to buy too, just need to make sure everything is in working order and the brakes are an easy fix. That would be a beast of a ford to own!

It would be better with the engine in my avatar, and air brakes!

Not a 1" socket. A 1" DRIVE:

1 Inch Impact Wrenches @ Air Compressors Direct.com - 1 In Impact Wrenches, One Inch Impact Wrench, 1 Inch Impact Wrenches, 1 In Impact Wrench, One Inch Impact Wrenches, 1 Inch Impact Wrench, One In Impact Wrench, One In Impact Wrenches

And a compressor at least this big to keep up with it:

FS-Curtis 555VT6 - 5-HP 60-Gallon Two-Stage Air Compressor (230V 1-Phase)

Torque depends on the model of the wheel, but ranges from 165 to 353 lb/ft according to this:

Torque multiplier lug nut wrench - Page 3 - Truckers Report Trucking Forum | Largest CDL Truck Driver Message Board

And x2 on why doesn't the seller fix it if it's that simple. These things love to poop out wheel cylinders, so look on the inside of the tires for evidence of brake fluid on the tires. Black and clean looking stain.

Wow thanks thats very helpful! But I don't have those tools, I'm pretty sure my friend does though so I guess I could work on it there.

And thanks for letting me know that about the brakes i'll take a look.

Actually I just thought of something, do you need a different drivers license to drive one of these? I hope not!

26000 lbs and under, no air brakes, not a 16+ passenger bus. Regular DL is good.

What does the seller say about why he won't fix a "simple" brake problem?

Go to a tire/service shop that services this size truck and ask about what they charge for a basic brake job. Deduct it from whatever you were going to offer.
