Well I made the mistake (or at least maybe the mistake) of buying 8 gallons of Rotella ELC NT coolant yesterday. It was for a good price and here in a couple months it's gonna be time for a coolant change, my question is will this stuff work in my 97? What I should've done is looked it up before I bought it, but I can return it. The only reason I even ask is because after looking it earlier today I saw where somebody had said you could use it in a 99 model up, but you couldn't in the older motors because they had brass injector cups (might not of been exactly what I read if not please forgive me I'm still fairly new to the diesel world this is my first diesel truck.) I can return the coolant if I need to, but I know rotella stuff is pretty good so if it'll work I'd like to use it. Any help would be great. Thank y'all!
Its not the type of injector cups, its the type of glue that holds them down. If you pulled all your cups and used that glue you would be OK with that coolant. Most of us use 'Fleet Charge'.
Some have had good results using ELC in their OBS trucks, but others haven't. It all boils down to what Glenn said: injector cup sealant. I pulled and replaced my cups using the 620 for the very purpose of running ELC coolant. I highly suggest to not pull your cups for the express purpose of running ELC. I did just that and it was a PITA.
The Fleet charge stuff is good stuff, just make sure to get test strips to verify SCA levels periodically and add as needed. You can run the standard green stuff as well and dose it with SCA additives.
For what it's worth I've been running final charge global (elc) for 11 years now with no issues. If the time comes that it damages the injector cup sealant i will be more than happy to reseal them with the newer stuff. It's been nice not having to mess with additive and test strips and scale precipitating out of solution and destroying water pump seals.
I wonder about the alleged ELC damage to the old style injector cup sealant. I replaced my injector cups awhile back when I replaced the injectors and the brass cups are a tight interference fit in their bore. I used the right sealant but I don’t think they even need sealant and even if they do I don’t see how coolant could work its way into the nonexistent gap between the cup and the head.
Anyone have any first hand experience with ELC causing injector cups to leak?
