I posted another thread about how my y-connection busted and spilled a lot of coolant. This is on the hose below the de-gas bottle and y's to a line going towards the firewall and the other 1" hose appears to go to the water-pump.
I went to several auto-parts stores this evening knowing I will need new coolant. I couldn't find what is in the truck and was hoping someone could steer me in the right direction. I have Shell Rotella Red Extended Life Coolant. I know that there is special diesel anti-cavitation additive in this coolant. Where do you all buy yours. I was at Autozone, O'Reilly's and Walmart. I couldn't find anything that I even thought was for a diesel truck. I was plenty frustrated though so I might have been staring at it and didn't know it. Where should I go and what other brands of ELC coolant besides Shell works in our trucks? I need to get this job done tomorrow.
I just picked up Zerex ELC at Napa. I would assume it would be ok to mix, but not completely sure about compatibility. If the smarty pants diesel guys post up that it's ok, then try Napa.
I had forgotten Tractor Supply. They were closed when I went shopping, but I am positive they will have diesel coolant of some kind, but ELC and the same Rotella Red? not that's another story.
If anyone knows 100% on combining brands being ok I'd like to hear that news just incase they don't have Rotella.
Tractor supply around here carries it and are much cheaper for the pure strength than any other parts store. Its is the Red ELC, as I just put it in my truck.
Don't forget places like Truck stops and any of the International Harvester
parts and service centers. They have the right stuff because that is where I
buy mine at.
Yes, you can use it if you're just adding to top off your system, but not if you're doing a full blown flush and fill.
Why is this a problem? This is what they had at Tractor supply and I suspected it might not be the right stuff. Depending on your reply I might be draining my system and replacing all the coolant.
With two 1-gallon bottles I made my own 50/50 mix. I ended up needing 2 gallons on the nose anyway, so it was 1 gallon ELC one gallon distilled water.
which did you get, the concentrate that was linked to at Tractor Supply earlier, or the pre-mix that was a Walmart find? If you diluted the 50/50 you went to 25% concentration... (on edit: for the amount you put in that is).
