These were from a while back and still seem to hold true.
One summer when I was stationed at the Naval Weapons Center China Lake, the local bank's time & temp sign got stuck flashing 199 degrees.
It was 'only' about 120 or 121, but it still made the front page of the local newspaper.
That was brutal. Over a 10-day period, the temperature never went below 100 degrees (even at 3 or 4 in the morning!) The enlisted barracks weren't air conditioned, either. You can sleep, but your body doesn't rest in that kind of heat.
The enlisted men that were living in the barracks were all dragging... and sniping at each other (at least those that still had the energy to be bitchy). The Officers (who lived in air conditioned quarters) couldn't understand why the troop morale was such a problem... they suspected that a bad batch of drugs had come through.
Well, I did something different this morning.
I went to a free car show!
Vintage and contemporary, saw a Jaguar 120 (spoiled with multiple ECV stickers), classic Corvettes, a Deuce Coupe, couple of Jeeps, a Slingshot and several other interesting vehicles.
No entry fee and no prizes, it's more of a "Meet & Greet" than a "Show".
Sunday mornings, 7-9, 3489 Mt' Diablo Blvd., Lafayette, CA, next door to the library.
Take 24 East, use the Central Lafayette exit, turn right on Oak Hill Rd., then turn left on Mt. Diablo Blvd. It will be on the right, a little more than two blocks up.
Or, from the other way, take 24 West, exit at Central Lafayette, turn Right on Deer Hill Rd., Right again on First St., then Left on Mt. Diablo Blvd. It will be just a few feet up, on the right, just past the Library.
Free Coffee and Doughnuts!
The summer of 2006 we had 45 days in a row over 100 degrees. I hope we never have that many again. Currently it is high 90's and low 100's so technically, it is not as bad, however, 98-99 feels no difference, that 101-102...
I flew into China Lake one time several years ago (Inyokern airport). We'd flown over the mountains, and were at 12,000 feet, where the temp was below zero. So we had closed all the vents to keep the temperature tolerable. Well, it was 118 in the shade at Inyokern, and I wasn't completely "aware" of that. We got to the end of the runway, and the sun was beating down, and I said to my passenger, lets open the canopy, it's getting a little warm in here. Wow! Opening that canopy was like opening an over door! That blew my mind.

I believe... it took me a long time to acclimate to the Mojave Desert... to whatever extent I DID acclimate, anyway...

We were visiting friends there, and I thank them for having a pool. We only spent one night there, but the temperature was just unbelievable to me. I don't think I'll ever go back again unless someone points a gun at me.
Howdy NorCal! Been too long since I checked in here.
Hey Dewd,
I hope that it was a little cooler up there today. We hit 104* down here on the Valley Floor. I'm getting ready to head North for work tomorrow and hope that it isn't the forecast 107*
