Let me start by saying this truck has been nothing but problems and I am ready to lite a match under it. 96 f250 with a 460, NON OBD2 I was having a intermittent no start problem and I was getting a code for the PIP signal. I replaced the Distributor along with the ignition module and a new battery at the same time (the old one was tired). Now truck starts up fine but runs poorly and check engine light is on solid all the time(it was not earlier). I have check and rechecked connections tried another battery another coil I have gone back to the original components and still the same issues. Double checked TDC and that the firing order was correct. The biggest problem that is driving me crazy now is I cant pull any codes from the computer, I had no issues communicating with the computer before this. Truck has a refurbished PCM but the was replaced previously for a transmission issue.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jim
One more thing to add which I find even more confusing, If I hold the OD button in the engine light goes out and truck smooths right out. I had a bad solenoid pack a few weeks back that was the cause of a limp mode condition.
I have never seen a solenoid pack cause the computer to go into stupid mode. Since you cannot pull the codes, the CEL is on constantly and the weird work around you found I would suggest to unplug the solenoid pack, then see if you can pull any codes. If the symptom remains then I suspect a bad replacement computer.
Have you noticed the fuel pump staying on whenever the key is in the Run position?
The fuel pump does not shut off when the engine light is on, if I hold the od button it will shut off. all I was able to pul a code with the button depressed. 512 KAM I believe it said.
Pull the "new" computer out and inspect. Assumes there is no warranty void if removed sticker. If there is, take the computer back and get another one.
I've got the transmission harness out again, I'm going to replace the connector on the solenoid pack as it looks questionable. the pcm will have to be a last resort as I can't get one off the shelf, will have to order another one. Previously the OD light was flashing and putting the truck in limp mode there was a dead short, after some digging and first replacing the pcm I replaced the solenoid pack and the problem was fixed. However maybe it was just a connection issue, I do not have many miles on it since that repair. It was throwing a code for the EPC shorted when I replaced the solenoid pack.
