Gas Guage

My gas gauge only goes to 1/2 tank and is not accurate at all to empty. What to change?
Thank You.

The first thing I would check is to pull it and see what shape the float is in. See if has developed any leaks and is partly filled.

Yeah, what John said. Pull the sender/float assembly out of the tank and check the float. Also turn the key on and move the float arm all the way from empty to full (and various points in between) and see what the gauge reads.

The float is made from two pieces of brass soldered together. Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float settles towards the bottom of the tank.

Float is available from Ford and is the same 1957/79 Passenger Cars/trucks, 1961/79 Econoline and 1966/79 Bronco.
