Gas Guage

On my 72 the fuel gauge when full sits at about 3/4 and when empty at 1/8th

is this fixable?

Yep, replace the gauge...if it's bad. You can check by pulling the fuel sender out of the tank and grounding the wires...if your gauge sweeps to Full and back to Empty, the gauge is good. Time for a new sending unit.

Check the float FIRST (by shaking it) before replacing the sending unit.

The float is made from two pieces of copper soldered together. Solder breaks down, gas seeps in, float slowly settles to the bottom of the tank.

The float (COAZ-9202-B) is still available from Ford and fits all 1957/79 Passenger Cars, Trucks, Bronco's and Econolines.
