Does the F-Series Go Overboard with Trim Choices?

Does the F-Series Go Overboard with Trim Choices?

Why are there so many different F-Series trim levels on the market? When you're the world's top-selling truck you need to have a truck for everyone. We break it down here.

As long as there is a demand and those that will buy them, I believe that's a good thing. That's what makes us all a little different and makes for a wide variety of choices. Personally I generally like things simple but these newer high trim level trucks will certainly spoil a person.

Would I buy a truck like the one in the picture? No!

Variety is the spice of life.

With that being said, not many vehicles, and in this case a pickup truck, can claim to have something or a trim level that will appeal to almost 100% of perspective buyers.

Yes and no. Once you get to the Lariat, you have the King Ranch, Platinum then the Limited. On the other end of the spectrum there is the XL and the XLT. What I'd love to see is a model between the XLT and the Lariat. The Platinum could easily be top dog. I'm not listing the Raptor just because it's a more "specialized" truck.

I don't know, the Lariat and Platinum couldn't do the configuration I wanted so it was just XLT for me.

The Raptor is the only model that has the combination that is perfect for me. LED headlights and taillights and cloth seats

I've been an upper trim guy for just about ever. Lariats have been my level of standard since the 80's. Most of you young whipper-snappers won't remember when a Lariat was the top trim.... wait.... with cloth seats... wait.... AND manual roll-down windows WITHOUT power locks. In fact, some don't even know that you could get an XLT Lariat. It was one trim.
A few weeks ago, I decided an XLT would be my next truck, and brought it home. This XLT is nicer than my first Lariats. Sometimes I think that I may not want another Lariat or King Ranch. Then I pass a Lariat or Platinum with LED headlights, and realize that's one option they could give us XLT owners, but if needed, make the halos a different color. Why should I feel substandard because I can't get a simple set of LED headlights? If I need leather, I'll get better leather in aftermarket with a personal touch for $1100. That MIGHT be the only option I miss... maybe.
Frankly, the Ford knows their market, and they are milking it. While I think truck prices could come down substantially if American manufacturers took a lesson from foreign manufacturers by having few trim levels with few options that could be added to each, because each trim has a good base. Would I care if I have some options that I didn't want to get but they were included? No, because I believe we all, XL to Limited owners, are paying for all this variety. Make large options like sunroofs, the best stereo, better leather, the options to add. If someone doesn't like carpet, or power seats, select the base model and add a few options. But frankly, as long as Ford can sell trucks of all trims, they are going to make them regardless what I or anyone else thinks.

I think this about says it all. Ford does milk it with their option groups such as with the XLT. You can get and XLT with either the 301a or 302a package groups. Then of course you can build off each group and option / price it like it's a Lariat. I really don't like how Ford does this. If I got an XL model with the power group which basically makes it an entry level XLT, you still don't get the chrome bumpers standard. In 2011 when I bought my truck, I wanted the XL model, I just didn't like how it looked even though it had all I wanted and needed.

But, with all that said, choices are good and the business model seems to be working quite well.

If you take a look at what GM is doing for 2019, they just blew Ford out of the water in regards to choices. I believe they are the ones that have gone overboard. We'll just have to wait and see how it works out for them.

I wouldn't buy a new GM half ton. But at least they don't force you into a high trim level just to get 4A and LED headlights.

While we are on the subject. I've always wanted to see a regular cab model with high-end trim level options.

A friend of mine just bought a 2018 Tundra, 44K MSRP and it has the blind spot and lane departure crap on it. No 44K F-150 Scab 4x4 will ever have it.

It pisses me off when car makers (and they all do it) use safety equipment as an options list. It's not like you're asking for heated steering wheels and cooled seats for pete's sakes.

Can you get the 6.2L in a WT/LS/LT trim, though?

XLT guy here. We've always had lots of Lariats in the area, but recently I'm amazed by how many Platinum's I see around here. Who really wants to spend $70k on a pickup truck with an ugly-*** chrome covered tailgate???
