You know what, disconnect it for six months.. maybe the thief will try it in the meantime and not get in. Then connect it back on six months later, the thief will have moved onto a different Ford?
My 2015 F-150 was broken into right in front of my house so thief knows where I live & park my truck. They stole the factory keyless entry code card so now they can rebreak in any time they want. Dealership says factory code can never be deactivated/turned off. Ford has no way to prevent thieves from rebreaking in once they steal the factory code card. Dealership wants $1,000 to replace the keyless entry module. How difficult is this to do myself?
While everybody was busy flaming each other, no one answered the OP's actual question. So...
The remote keyless entry feature is controlled by the BCM (Body Control Module). The factory code is baked in and can't be changed. You would need to change the entire BCM and I don't doubt it could easily cost $1K.
You can't do it yourself. Before removal the dealer has to download all of your vehicle specific information from the old BCM and re-upload it to the new BCM. In addition, since this module contains vehicle security related data, the dealer's programming equipment has to have an active internet connection while this is going on.
If you disconnect the keypad, the BCM will throw trouble codes. Whether this will interfere with other features of the keyless entry system or not I wasn't able to determine. Disconnect it. You'll find out.
Thank you very much pupnduck for your insight. I appreciate the heads up on the bcm generating trouble codes when the
keypad is disconnected from power. I'll give it a whirl this weekend and let you know what I find out
