I also found that if your phone has the usb C plug, it matters, atleast on mine, which way it is plugged in. I put a mark on my cable, if I turn it over it wont work for data it will just charge.
Then something is wrong with your cable. USB-C isn't a new USB standard like USB 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 or 3.1. It's sole focus is on the physical connection.
Also, make sure you're not using a Thunderbolt cable, which has a USB-C connector. Those are NOT fully interoperable with USB Type-C. There is different circuitry in the cable for Thunderbolt.
I got this 1' braided one from Amazon. Works flawlessly and it isn't 3' long:
Thanks guys- It was the cable. I had one in my amazon shopping cart and then remembered wife was out running errands- for poops and grins I called and asked her to pick me up a 'quality' USB sync/charger. She came home with a $12 cord and it worked like a charm. Now I get to play around with some more features...

Appreciate all your help.
I refused to accept it was the cable for a long time because it worked for everything else. When i finally broke the old one i figured i would try one of the ones they recommended, and it worked LOL. Felt like an idiot for not trying it sooner so i could use it. Android auto isn't perfect by any means, it has some bugs but its does work well and since ford removed the spotify applink support it gives me control back.

Haven't encountered any bugs yet but I will say, that initially at least, I'm not as impressed as I thought I'd be. I can (and did) run google maps for the trip home from my son's baseball game last night and it seemed like almost half the screen was filled up with driving info rather than the map itself. I really like the layout of the OEM navigation system, how the map fills the screen and you can see more around you, but would need real time info especially when away from home traveling with family. Haven't tried waze yet though, so maybe I'll like that better. The other issue is toggling between running AA and the audio. Back and forth to work I really like my local FM stations, on long road trips I like news and talk on sirius, and depending on the mood of the family we might get into some spotify playlists. I know it can be done but I just need to get comfortable doing it so I'm not trying to figure it out going down the road.

Thanks again for the help.
A few things that I like about android auto over the stock nav is voice search. This past weekend I was driving through TN and wanted to find an Outback. I tried using voice on the stock system using a POI search. It just kept failing to understand. after about 3 tries I clicked over on android auto and said "ok google, navigate to the nearest outback". It searched and launched maps without any other inputs. Also waze works really well too and gives potential hazards and police location. I also think that music sounds much better than Sirius. I don't listen to much FM here. I do wish it had a better way to access android auto apps though.
I do like waze better, the real time user provided info is very helpful, not just for avoiding cops either lol. I agree about the audio issue when not using the AA sources like pandora, spotify or google music, it's a pain. They need to work with the radio manufactures to standardize a control protocol for basic info and control of fm/cd/sat radios in the host system. I'm far enough north of detroit that FM reception is sketchy so i don't really miss that, but if i listen to satellite radio it is a pain. Honestly 99% of my music comes from spotify, i have a few hundred albums saved on my phone so its not dependent of service and the audio quality exceeds the stock radios capability.
The google assistant is very good, slow at times but normally very accurate. You can do a ton of stuff with it too, nav, audio control, text/call and even calendar events.
Only down side i have found running AA is that it can overdraw the usb ports current limit and cause the phone to discharge and if you use your phone to monitor torque/forescan it will run pretty slow.
I have downloaded the App to my phone however, cannot see if that by installing this and going to the trouble to set it up as documented above if it will be worth it for me. I just want to be able to use voice to reply to text messages when I am on long road trips.
I tried everything I could find on the internet, I bought new cables, I updated everything, still no Android Auto. My final effort was to do a factory reset on my 2017 f250..... That appears to have finally fixed it. I now have Android Auto.
