Android Auto vs External GPS
Android Auto vs External GPS
Whats your thoughts on whats better, using Anroid Auto for your nav or an external nav? I dont really like that Android Auto completely locks your phone down.
When I am traveling without the RV, Google Maps via Android Auto works well. I can ask Google any questions I may have, or inquire on distances and weather and road conditions.
When I have my RV, I use both. The external GPS keeps me from running under a low bridge. Google Maps will re-route based on traffic and it may not be a good thing.

Thanks for the info. We full time RV and it would be nice to know when a low bridge is comin. We've had a few close calls. Luckily I can back a trailer into a knats *** without touching the sides. Theres a couple other map style apps that have low bridge info but I gotta have the route already planned. I guess I just havent gotten used to all of google maps options in android auto. I think I might try using Waze. I wish my co-pilot was better. She's more concerned with taking pictures and Instabooking.
Any recommendations on a good external GPS?

I use the Android Auto feature for the Google maps Nav around town and when not towing. Works better than the Ford Nav. Other than that, I don't normally use AA or plug into the "media enabled" USB slot, as I don't like the way AA takes over the phone & head unit.
When towing the 5er, I only use my Garmin RV 770LMT-S. Great assist to avoid low overpasses, restricted roads, etc and excellent for rest stops, truck stops, food & fuel.

FWIW ... the print file for that mount is shared on thingiverse. Local libraries and many print places offer print services these days.
Anyway... the dedicated "vs." phone GPS debate ... all depends on how one looks at it
I've told myself that I wouldn't get another dedicated GPS several times in recent years ... But when my old Garmin died, it only took a couple RV excursions for me to get another one.
jsavelli, Yes, Sync3 lets you play your phone onto the display.

I use the Sync Nav without a phone and when I feel like connecting the phone I use the Google Maps/Android Auto. Either way, I don't have a clear preference but, like said above by Brother Bluto, I don't like how AA takes over the phone.
My TT Toy Hauler is almost as tall as a 5th wheel trailer so I should start paying attention to bridge heights.

ParkAdvisor--This is an app that helps you find RV parks around the country but also has a map system that shows the location of stores like walmart, cabelas, basspro and other relevant businesses. It also has low bridge or road hazard info but it has to be entered by a previous user so not all the info is there. I rarely use it.
