Fuel Tank Problems

So I emptied the fuel tank on my 69 F100 before replacing all of the lines and the fuel pump. Reason being is that my truck on a number of occasions would stop after spluttering to a halt. Thinking that it was either a pump or carb problem, I replaced the pump first.Once the tank was emptied, I put 10 litres of fuel back in as the contents of the tank seemed pretty clean. Connected every thing back up and attempted to start the truck with no success.Disconnected the line under the tank and no fuel came out. I stuck a piece of wire through the outlet back into the tank and still nothing came out. I did this a number of times. Next step was to blow into the tank from the inlet at the top, with that fuel came flowing out the bottom.I then blew compressed air back up into an empty tank to clear anything that might be blocking the line. Filled it up again and still no fuel would come out. I then blew into the tank from the inlet at the top, with that fuel came flowing out the bottom again. The float is missing off the sender, which I found yesterday but I don’t think that this could be blocking the hole.Any suggestions of what the problem might be.

Sounds like some type of sediment is in the outlet. I would drain the tank and flush it out. Then check the outlet with an air compressor blow gun. Also make sure that the rubber hoses underneath the cab are in good shape. A small crack will allow air to get sucked into the rubber fuel line and the fuel pump won't be able to fill the carb with gas.

Thanks Gary,

I found this last night. See picture below. The fuel exits the tank from the top not the bottom.
I think that this set up is like when you try and drain a pool with a garden hose, same principal. The cap seems a little loose, but i think that allows the tank to breath.
Truck seems to be working much better now, still a little concerned that it may have problems happen again.

Are you saying that when the gas cap is left a little loose the gas tank and pump work fine, but if you tighten the gas cap up it runs and then dies after a few minutes, if this is so you need a vented gas cap. This is the same with corvettes.

No cap is original and is vented, so I don't think that is the problem. May be it was a weak pump (now replaced). I was just surprised that the tank exit was at the top of the tank.

If you have the original type of fuel pump, remember that there is a filter (cartage type) on the bottom of the fuel pump. The filter may need replacing.

ALL 1957/77 in-cab fuel tanks have the fuel exiting from the top of the tank, because the fuel tank sending unit doesn't have a pickup tube.

The outlet is at the top so it is harder to pick up sediment in the bottom of the tank. Since it can't use gravity the pump has to suck the gas out. So both rubber hoses have to be in good shape. Otherwise they might allow air to pass. So the pump will be sucking that air and not gas. This happened to my Bump. And others on this forum. So I suggest replacing all the rubber hoses you have tank to carb. Cheap insurance.

Thanks everyone for your input and info, happy to report that truck ran well over the weekend, didn't miss a beat and once again I have learnt something else along the way.

So the fun never stops. Great weekend last weekend, 2 days of driving no problems. I go to start the truck on Sunday morning and nothing, very little fuel in the the top fuel filter at all.
Keep in mind this is with a brand new pump and replacement of all the rubber fuel lines. I did have the sender off on Saturday, but i don't think that this would make a difference. Even went to the extent of blowing into the tank to push the fuel through, (which has worked before) still no good.
The sender is not working and the float seams to have disintegrated, so presumably there will be parts still left ion the tank.

Thoughts?

Float disintegrated?!? Remove the gas cap and smell the gas. Does it smell like some rat put something else in your tank?
