Electrical Issues

I recently purchased a 2018 F250 Platinum the first part of May, from a dealer in Texas but about 3 hours from the town I live in. No one around where I live could come close to the price they were selling them for. I drove it for 2 weeks and noticed a bit of movement in the steering wheel, almost like it was out of alignment or even kind of felt like the computer was making it “twitch” about an inch side to side when I would take my hands of the wheel on a flat straight road. I have never owned a ford before and chaulked it up to this is just how they handle I guess, naive, I know. It then set in my garage for 10 days while I was on vacation, no one else drove it or even touched while I was gone, have cameras on my house to prove that. When I got back, I drove it for 3 days before it went nuts on me. I noticed on the 3rd day, while heading to work, for a moment, like literally a millisecond, it acted like the power shut down and restarted. Loss of power steering and the a/c turned off and the on again. This all took place in the time it would take you to blink your eyes. I also noticed when it started doing this through out the day that it would turn on the cooling seats on the passenger side, drivers side was already on. I turned both of them completely off and seemed to fix the problem, I thought. That evening, I went to run a quick errand up the road and about a mile from my house it completely shut down, no power steering, power brakes, motor turned off, windshield wipers came on by themselves, horn started honking on it’s own, flashed a bunch alerts on the dash, but the truck still acted like it was running. Would not allow me to turn it off with the button, disconnected & reconnected the batteries and was able to start it and drive it home. Next morning would not start at all and had to have it towed to a local dealer. They told me it is a fuse box that needs to be replaced but the part is on back order. They have now had my pickup for 1 full month and keep telling me the part is still on back order. They gave me a half ton XL to drive but would not give me a 3/4 ton because they were worried that I might haul a trailer with it. ( the exact reason why I bought an f250). Has anyone else had any kind of issues likes this with theirs? The pickup only has 1,000 miles on it! Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like a bad BCM or corroded harness.

30 days at the dealership should be lemon law territory in Texas I believe? I'd start the process to at the very least light a fire under their ***. Worst case is you get a brand new truck.

MAybe the Harness connector at the rear of the truck on the rh side several have had water get in them and cause a whole bunch of weird electrical issues.

I’ve started to look into the lemon laws in Texas to see if they apply to my situation. They’re suggesting at the dealership that is servicing it, that I must have recently tried to jump start a semi truck battery because another guy took his in for kind of the same problems and that was when is pickup started going haywire, but his truck is 2 years older than mine with a lot more than a thousand miles on it. I haven’t jump started anything with my truck because I haven’t had it in my possession long enough to do so.

The electrical connectors underneath the truck could be the culprit. Specifically, look at the ones near the bumper. If the leads are corroded then that's a pretty good indication that you've found the source of the problem. I wouldn't rule out a bad battery or battery connection either.

Idk how to, but if you can track from build to sales hopefully it wasn't flooded in Harvey. Sometime between Aug-Sept. 2017.
Good luck.

Here's a link to Texas lemon law info. Take a look at the "30 Day Test" section, and also make note of the "Serious Safety Hazard Test".

The $35 complaint filing fee may well be a worthwhile investment.

Thanks, I’ll take a look at it and let y’all know what I find out! I appreciate all the advice! There is no way the truck was affected by Harvey because it was not built until Feb.- April of this year. I custom ordered it. And I have seen some threads about the back electric adapters being corroded from water, but I live in West Texas (Lubbock to be exact) and we have not seen rain in months! The only rain we have had is when the truck was in the garage for 10 days and then after that it has been in the service shop. I haven’t even ran it through a car wash since I’ve owned it! But checking those adapters is still worth looking into, so thank you.

Those adapters are well worth checking. They could've gotten water in them during the final washing before you took delivery of the truck and they've just now corroded. Sure hope that's all it is but yeah... 30 days at the dealer with little explanation and perhaps some blame just isn't right. Like was said above, I'd go the Lemon Law route and get a fire lit under that dealer. Absolutely crazy.

Update on the electrical issues with my 2018

Well, today marks the 61st day that I have been without my truck! The reason for waiting so long for my truck to be repaired, has been explained to me that a back ordered part has no set date on when it will ever arrive and there is no one to reach out to, to speed the process up. WRONG! I took everyone's advice, filed a lemon law case in Texas, and was contacted the very next to day by a gentleman with the TXDMV. He told me that I had a strong case for filing the Lemon Law, but asked if it was ok if he tried to reach out to a contact of his at Ford that might be able to assist me before we opened the case. I told him that was fine with me, but if it does not work, I would like to go ahead and open the case. No kidding, the very NEXT day, I received a call from him with somewhat good news. He had reached out to his contact, who he said was more than apologetic and somewhat pissed off about the whole situation. Long story short, she expedited the part overnight to the dealership who received it on Monday the 16th of this month. Side note: I was originally told by the service rep that there were only 3 of these certain parts in circulation in the U.S. right now, and I was 1 of 5 that needed it, like a lottery part I guess! Anyways, the part is a fuse box and an entire wiring harness, so I knew it would take some time to install. After a week went by, I called on Monday to see if it was done yet, to which I was informed that the service rep I had been dealing with quit on Friday and they were unaware of the situation nor could the even locate the case # or my truck being there! I told them not to worry about it cause the next time we speak my lawyer would be present. I got the phone call today from the new service rep stating that he had located the case and truck, gone over all the notes, and had spoken with Ford about it. He asked if I could bring him my spare key because it turns out that I never needed the fuse box or wiring harness I have been waiting 60 days on, it was just a bad PCM that they keep in stock! I dropped the key off at lunch and said my truck should be ready by 5pm today or first thing in the morning!!!

This is quite a tale of ineptitude on the part of someone, probably the dealer. Kudos to the TXDMV for getting your situation expedited. It doesn't seem like someone from the government is on your side very often.
