Five wires sounds like a Ford 2G alternator. Which would be consistent for your year I believe.
It has a large rectangular connector with two large Black wires coming out of it, as well as an additional connector? Seems like there have been several discussions lately with good images of a 2G and it's connections.
It's the very least desirable of all Ford model alternators, but it can still work if it's either been kept in real good condition physically, or has had parts replaced with the substitute parts with better materials. Or has simply been swapped out altogether with a modern replacement.
However, it's still considered a reasonable practice to replace it with a 3G model.
Got a pic of yours just so we can be sure what you have?
Alternator is presently af the repaid shop getting new brushes and bearings at 160,000km I thought it a wise preventative meassure. I also have a 70amp externally regulated Dixie brand A-217. From what I am hearing it makes sence to give up on the old unit and alter the wiring to accommodate the swap. Sadly I currently have no literature or schematics to perform the surgury. I seen the post of an 88 schematic but it differs significantly down stream of my 87 (Carbed vs EFI) so I am not sure how difficult the task will be.
Since it is at a repair shop for alternators, just ask the people there what model it is.
Is it internally regulated now? Or is it already an externally regulated model?
