My friend picked up a 292 from a 60's passenger car to rebuild and it had what appears to be a factory type bracket with a hard line and schrader type air valve. It won't be used but we just can't figure out what it was for? Anyone have a clue?
Automatic transmission? It was also on the 1964 trucks with the 292 and Cruise-O-Matic, I believe. Cory was showing pictures of his, if I recall. Let me see if I can dig up that info.
Thank you, that looks like a similar part. I just didn't understand the function my 64 shop manual doesn't cover auto trans and I haven't had an auto trans since my 55 crown victoria I owned in 1968
The original trans cooler lines are not just two simple lines that run from the transmission to the radiator. They are routed to a few different places and a number of hose clamps and connections. I believe the port with the valve is used to inject air into the lines and observe for leaks at a presure that is higher than the normal operating pressures. Just a guess, but I'll see what else I can find.
It was more like this picture where it branched off of the lower radiator hose and went to a cooler on the side of the transmission. I'll post another link to some actual pictures of a 1966 system.
OK, thanks. I'm confused now if it was to check for leaks or check the trans pressure?
Might be trans pressure. Sure, that makes sense. Looking in a 1961 manual to see if I can find anything. They were not used after 1964 on the trucks as far as I know. My 1966 doesn't have the valve.
Here's an example 1966 system of the cooling lines. They are a hoot, but I hope to find some so I can take my truck back more to original.
Yep, for testing transmission pressure. One adjustment is the throttle rod clevis until you get a reading of more than 80 but less than 85 PSI. At least that is the specs for 1961.
The Automatic transmissions, not even counting the cooler system in this case, have more parts stuffed in them than another other unit, including the radio (resistors, capacitors, etc.).
Nothing like a good challenge!! Haha...
Once I found the NOS oil cooler I decided I had to try.
Then two of the Planetary Gear assemblies.
And two Main Control #V2 units.
I could blow up one transmission and still have enough parts to rebuild it again. LOL.
Hi, I am writing to you because I am in need of a trans cooler like the one in your picture. By chance did you ever use it or still have it and or the part number so I can search for one myself? I have a '62 F100 uni that I have just finished a nut and bolt resto and now my cooler leaks. I go by Koolkat, my name is Keith and my number is (616) 780-5802. If you would please take the time from your day to answer either way, yes, no, go to hell or so on I would really appreciate it.
Thanks, Koolkat/Keith
