I just looked at a '69 F100 SWB 2wd today. The body is in good shape for the most part. It has one dented place in the rear quarter panel and the primer is chipping. It has a 302 and 3 on the tree but the clutch is disconnected so that tells me something is up. (This was at a car lot that was closed) The brake pedal didn't seem to have anything behind it either. The interior was boogered up as well. The original bench seat was gone and had two crummy bucket seats in place. Radio wires were hanging down under the dash and one big speaker was in the floor. The 302 did have some modifications to the outside, intake and such. The gas cap was gone and the tailgate wouldn't open completely. All the badges were gone.... These are the good aspects of it. Some numb-skull took a torch and melted down the front coils to lower the front. Then they went to the back and torched a couple springs off each side. Then they cut off the shackle, reversed it, and welded it back. Then they took the remaining longest leaf spring, bent it down at about a 45 degree angle and bolted it back to the shackle to lower the rear!!!
The asking price is $1200 OBO but after I point out all the bad things about it I might get it for about $600 or a little more, but not much more. What do ya'll think?
In our neck of the woods (Seattle) you can get a decent 67-71 F250 in for around 1200 - 1500 that has not been hacked up. Sounds like they shoud pay you to remove it! Then use it as a donor.
Less, a lot less. Or just keep looking. What sounds bad to me is that like you say, someone has made modifcations. My latest truck has been a real uphill battle simply because no one took care of it before me. I've had to rebuild the brakes including flex lines, booster and drums in front. I just got thru the front end including ibeam pivots, kingpins and the steering box and pump. And now I need at least a valve job as I have a completely flat cylinder not to mention leaking exhaust manifolds and my tail pipe has broken off in the muffler.
What I liked about it is that it had the features that I wanted that my previous F-100 didn't have like PS/PB/Automatic and a V-8, and I could transfer tires, lumber rack and toolbox, but I would be very dissappointed how much money and time (don't get me wrong, I love working on it) I've put into it when I bought it for $1400 if it weren't for the fact that a minor fender bender which was someelse's fault got me a $1900 settlement and I got to keep the truck. And we're not talking about the little things that didn't really seem apparent when I was shopping for the truck: a broken vent line on the cab tank, a leaking filler line on the aux tank, window regulators, window rattle kits, rear wheel bearings, a radiator, a heater core, heater valve tons of crap dropped into the heater box that kept the vent doors from working properly....
Keep looking or offer low and if you get it then unless you've got a lot of time, tools and money, be patient for the day that it becomes a good dependable truck.
Get a truck trader and look on ebay. I have seen some really clean 67-72 F-100s for 1200-1500.
I think you should get paid to haul that truck away. If your brief inspection showed all the stuff it did then I guarantee that evrything the previuos owner(s) touched will reflect the same mentality. You could expect to open up a can of worms every time you try to work on it.
You won't believe how many of these old trucks are around once you start looking, so there is no need to buy a money pit.
The body is in good shape so I am interested in it. The frame is good as well, except for two slightly rusted cross members. The interior is straight as far as doors, dash, floor boards, etc. The radio and similar things are the problem. I'll go try to deal with somebody next week. I'm thinking more like $500 now. I have found a few an hour or so from here but one had a stuck engine, another lost title, etc, so I'm counting on this one. I'll take digital photos if I get a chance.
Remember this is a 69 short box, not really easy to find. Sounds like a pile but if the body is decent enough and your not afraid of the mechanicals I would start out a 300, maybe go to 500 if you really want it. No more than that though. I recently passed up a 70 shorty for 300, was just the body and frame, needed glass and drivetrain.
Just remember that the economy is in the toilet and old stuff really is cheap right now. I just emptied out my ebey watch list last night and here are some of the items; One very straight 67-72 model project shorty only got to $400, A 59 that was listed as a 58, shorty with 25,000 miles and some amatuer attempt at touching it up only got to $400, an absoluty georgous 70 camper special Ranger with 77,000 miles fully loaded garage kept closed for $2800. A pretty decent looking red 64 Galaxy 390 4 speed convertable that only made it to the mid $3000 range.
I have seen several 67-72 shortys that were very nice go in the $3000 range. I watched one that was a 2 owner with 40,000 miles and working a/c that they relisted, end up going in the low $3000 range
And check out item # 2433081799. A red 64 F-250 with 15824 actual miles, red with the chrome grille and bumpers that is at $3000 and reserve is met. It still has a couple days to go so it may bring a hefty price but My bet is maybe $4500.
If you are just itching for a major project and have a lot of spare time on your hands then go for it, but when you have put $6000 into that pile and it is still only worth $1500 on the market you will wish you had started with a lot better truck. You are basically buying what you can see, a body.
If you just gotta have it, do not go over $500- I have bought two running sport customs with no modifications for $700- all I did was rebuild the engines and trannies. My Current Sport Custom: I've had it for 3 years. Can't beat it for $700.
I've got a built 429 and C6 to put in it so new coils up front and leafs in the back would be the major items to replace. If the 302 runs okay I'll sale it to go towards the suspension. If the 3 speed is good I'll sale it as well.
