Removing the tailgate

So yeah.. Im asking. This should be a very simple procedure and not unlike removing Chevy and Dodge tailgates. Lift half way, undo the two support cables, lift outward from the passenger side then side the entire thing to the right and pull it off the post on the driver side. Except mine just will not budge. I even tried prying gently.. how do these things come off?

Your description is accurate.....might be a build up of rust and gunk on one or both ends.

Spray PB Blaster (or even just WD-40) liberally in both hinges and leave it for a day to let it soak in.

Well hell.. and here it felt like I was almost prying too hard on it. Ok thanks, I'll soak it down and give her another shot.

The passengers side has a flat spot on the round hinge which has to be lined up with the notch in the truck side of the hinge or not won't come out.

as best as I can remember, that happens closer to the all the way down position than it does the half way up position.

if you watch the passengers side hinge when you lower it, you should notice where it lines up.

Yeah what I was trying to describe is that the driver side just would not come out for anything. The video above is the same method to remove tailgates on Chevy's and Dodges as well.

Looking at it again yesterday.. it's almost as if the cup that slides onto the 'pin' is seized. I need to upload a video of this because it's very odd looking when you watch the tailgate being raised and lowered. Look at the pic.. ok so instead of rotating where logically it should.. the red cup/black bushing. It's rotating where the cup is pressed into the flange on the tailgate.

That’s odd.....first thought is that it’s rusted right onto it, but if that were the case, I’d think that side would simply fall off.

That’s what happened on my 2006 F350 tailgate; the cup that the tailgate slips onto (the black cup in your drawing) rusted away so when I opened it, the tailgate fell off on the drivers side (the cable kept it from falling to the ground).

I'm not sure what to tell you. i just tried to take the tailgate off of a 2010 that i know that has never been off. it moves freely, and the passgenger's side came right off the oblong peg, but the driver's side wouldn't easily disengage from the cup.

as said above, your best bet is some penetrating lube like seafoam deep creep, penetrol 90, or pb blaster and let it soak for a while. i'm guessing its just never been off and corrosion is keeping it from coming off easily.

or, alternatively, forget about it and leave it on

Something I just thought about is the torsion spring. You probably have to have the tail gate most of the way up to take the pressure off the spring so that it can slide out of the slot. With the gate down there will be a ton of force on the slot which would keep it from being able to slide out.

I only took mine off once and that was 2 years ago now. The only reason I took it off was the spring was clicking when I lowered the gate. Other than that, I never had a need to mess with it.

Ok, just confirmed what I was saying. Same 2010 that I had problem a with later came right off without any trouble at all once you get the gate back to vertical. Once vertical , the spring is unloaded and the drivers side slides right out

Interesting.. so does that mean though that the 2013 red ford in the first videos tailgate hinges are different? I will definitely try that on mine later today just to see. What strikes me as odd thinking about this is that I noticed something the first time I lowered my own tailgate like.. it's very light.

Oh and Im taking it off so I can resolve a small surface rust issue along the very bottom edge that you can even really see with the tailgate on the truck.

My 2006 F350 tailgate doesn’t have any springs in it. That must be the issue with yours. Mine doesn’t move like yours does jn your second video. Must be a different set up.
