Explorer want start with key
Just put a new starter on 2004 explorer and now it want turn over with the key and then when you jump it from the hot side of the battery it turns over but still want start

You might try shifting the transmission to neutral and trying with the key again. Maybe somehow you jostled the park/neutral safety switch during the starter install (even though they are not very close in proximity). Report back on if that changes anything.
Out of curiosity, is this the same reason you replaced the starter to begin with? Did you do any diagnostics to confirm the old starter was bad? Do you have another key you can try? Does the Security or Theft light on the instrument color come on or flash when you try to start the engine?
