Does anybody drive with their exhaust brake on all the time

Does anybody drive with their exhaust brake on all the time
Just curious my buddy drives with his on all the time and told me yesterday you should drive with it all the time it helps recirculate the exhaust fumes so that they don't go back out don't know whether he's feeding me a line of horse poo or not

No. Only time I turn it on is when in mountains and towing 5th wheel. Then I turn it on and off as needed. I believe you can get a DTC of turbo over boost when used all the time.

I use mine on occasion when driving empty. I like it hilly areas or in-town driving. I use it all the time while towing. Your buddy is yanking your chain, though.

It certainly does not recycle the exhaust, which still flows out the tailpipe.

speaking for the ‘17+ at least, there are no detrimental effects with running it all the time. Won’t over boost or cause problems. Only spot to watch it is on slippery roads, as it can cause a significant braking action on the rear wheels that traction control/abs can’t correct and may lead to a skid.

I think if Ford had meant for the exhaust brake to be activated all the time, Ford would either, 1) not put a switch to turn it on or off, or 2) it would be like traction control, always active unless you turn it off.

JMHO and 2 cents

JMHO......if Ford didn’t want it to be on at least most of the time, they would have put the switch in a handier spot, like on the steering wheel, or someplace where one does not have to take their eyes off the road to find it!! It is only active when ones foot is off the go pedal and the cruise is not active

Must be a pretty weak exhaust brake...if I leave the jakes turned on in the peterbilt semi tractor I drive with no trailer hooked up the jakes darn near lock the rear wheels up..

it in no way even resembles a real Jacobs Engine Brake!!!! Whole different principle, but.........if one uses it like a Jake and downshifts, keeping the RPM’s up it is still quite effective.

JMHO Ford wanted you to know you turned it on by having to reach over and press the button. there was no brake on the 11-14 like on the 15=16 when they changed turbos.

No "Jake" brakes in our trucks in the early 70's!! Guess they didn't want us making excessive noise in the middle of the night! We did have compression release handles and front wheel braking limiter's. Never did find out what that second shift handle on the floor did!!!

and just FYI, mine is on just about 100% of the time, going on three years now, no issues so far.

I do a lot of coasting around town - the exhaust brake would ruin mileage. So no, I only use it when needed on down hill runs that would otherwise require brakes.

I use mine a lot when towing because it help to slow down without using brakes. I did get a DTC and reduced power because of it. My dealer did some sort of flash and no more troubles.

I don't tow yet but I use it only on a steep downhill road coming home so I don't have to ride the brakes.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but on the 11-14's since there was no switch, they were on all the time by default.
