So my 3500 budget does not seem to be a reasonable expectation for parts l am listing out. Therefore my build plan will change.
As stated in another thread, I want to just refeshen up the engine a little but invest in a solid top end. Truck won't be a looker, just a good city driver and occasional hauler of stuff in the eventual move we will be doing.
I keep seeing very affordable aluminum gt40 heads on eBay out of California. They are newly machined with 1/2 inch holes ready to go but if it looks too good to be true it probably is
Skip the 351 I have is a roller block. I wanted to go with it for that reason as well as availability of parts. Economy, price, and easy swap also played factors.
I've never messed around with a big block which would be cool.
Block went off to the machine shop today! Sold some stuff and have a budget for AFR 185 heads now!
Just need to pick a cam now. I have some thoughts and now that the budget is back on I am looking for that 400 rwhp goal again.
Builder recommended that i look into link bar lifters instead of the spider and dog bones I have now due to some failures in other engines of the same type. Any thoughts on this?

I've had dog bones and spyder in my 331 now for 14 years. These worked by a Ford Racing Z303 cam. Link bar lifters can and do fail too.
baddad I run the the stock lifters in my 5.0 for my mustang with an E303 with no issues. I have my eye on this cam but i dont think its outrageous as far as lift or duration goes. Your thoughts?

Based on what you posted as parameters back when you started this thread, I would pick a cam with less duration and a wider LSA in the 112-114* range. I doubt that cam's going to let you pass emissions.
Passing emissions is going to be your limiting factor here. That 110* LSA I doubt will get you past that. You're going with a carb, right ? What intake and carb ? Seems to me an EFI cam will be what you're going to need. They work great with carbs too, so don't let the EFI label think they don't. I've run them and they actually make a carb more responsive and idle cleaner.
