Back up cameras

I have a question I'm hoping someone can help with. I have the camera in the tailgate, and another by the 3rd brake light. When I take the tailgate off, the camera by the 3rd brake light stops working. Is there a way to keep that camera operational when the tailgate is off?

Thanks for your input.

Did you put the sealed pugs from your glove box in the empty plugs where the tailgate wiring attached? I think they need to be in to make the 3rd brake light camera work.

Hello,
Look in your console or glovebox and you should have a few plug connector caps in a plastic wrap. When you take your gate off, cap the wires under the truck that you unplugged. Not sure if you have to look anywhere else on your screen for just that high mount camera. I do not have that setup but I read a little about it somewhere.
I figure it is something simple since some take their gate off for the 5th wheel hookup and I would think the high mount camera is still active for that purpose.
Update when you figure it out. Hope I am sending you in the right direction.

Thanks for responding. Yes, I put the plugs in the wire harness. There are three plugs in the kit. I could only find the two places to put the plugs that you have to disconnect to remove the tailgate. The third plug is a small round one and I couldn't find anywhere for it to go.

Are you referring to the CHMSL camera?

I removed my tailgate on my 18 and CHMSL still works and I didn't mess with the plugs at all. I do have the factory 5th wheel and goose package.

Same problem here. Tailgate off CHMSL camera works sometimes if I hit the button. I don't understand why Ford did not make it defualt to the CHMSL camera when the tailgate is removed.

About the size of a pen cap? That's for the rear camera on trucks equipped with the 360 degree camera system.

Yeah, I have the 5th wheel package too. Took the tailgate off, put the caps on the wires, pushed the button on the dash for the camera and nothing. Was just hoping there was a trick someone knew of.
