What's the story on this gear reduction starter? I looked it up, and it seems the standard starter looks like the GM units, with the solenoid on the starter which slides the gear out. It looks like this.
There are two different ones, depending on if it's an auto or manual tranny.
They do list a gear reduction starter, but they do not have a picture, and it's for a manual tranny only. What was the special application for this starter?
The other ones do like like they have the same pattern as the old style starters.
All 1995 Ford Gasoline Engines have gear reducer starters. I do not know what year they started but I think they still have them on the latest ones.
No they do not look like the GM starter, the motor is much smaller than the GM or the older Ford. But yes they do have the sliding starter drive and a solenoid mounted on top.
I will try and post a exploded view of it from the 1995 Ford shop manual in a little while.
All 1995 Ford Gasoline Engines have gear reducer starters.
Something's wrong somewhere. I went to partsamerica.com, and punched in a 95 f150 with a 5.0, and all the starters they had pictured looked like the picture above. They had Bosch and some other brands too, and they all looked like the picture above. As far as I can tell, the above picture is not a gear reduction starter.
I wonder why they got away from the old style starter? I was always told the GM type was better because it slid the gear out before the starter started rotating, but I have had very few failures of the older style Ford starters.
I think I have answered my own question, the drive gear is way off center so I see no way I could convert it with out changing the transmission. I have a 4R70W transmission.
But here is the Exploded View form the ford manual.
The drive is offset and (16) is the Plant Gears. This is the only starter in the Ford Shop Manual.
