So, this is a shot in the dark, my wife drives a 2005 ford explorer xls. The summer weather is here, we were able to run across the console a.c. duct work and console back panel, so we added that in to help keep the kiddos cooler in the back. In the pull-it-yard adventures, I saw a 2003 ford explorer with the rear a.c. and roof vents. The whole interior setup was there and intact.
am I crazy to think that I could pull it and drop it in the wife's ride and get it working properly? How big of a project would it be? Would it even be worth it in the end?
You'd most likely be better off to just replace the 2005 Explorer with one that has the rear A/C already. You'd need to plumb the rear heater core and rear A/C evaporator core, change out the A/C compressor and probably a manifold or two, run the electrical for the rear A/C controls, get everything removed from the donor vehicle without damaging it, install it in the 2005 without damaging it, reassemble with no leaks, then debug until it all works correctly.
Unless your wife can go without her Explorer for a few weeks and you do not value your sanity, I would not recommend this project.
Sanity? What's that? I lost all that when I had kids
I've got access to a shop to work in, and have extra hands if needed. So install shouldn't take too terribly long. I've always been a diy'er and this project kind of peaked my interest.
