I want to start off saying im not experienced in auto repair. My truck had this smell around the rear, that smelled like oil. This went on a couple weeks. Then finally it made this nasty grinding noise and we stopped driving it, and had it towed. A friend told me it was the rear. There's a junkyard in my area....Crazy Rays, and my friend and I are going to attempt to remove one. My question is, what rear's will work for my 05? I was told that it cant be a 4x4 rear, only a rear wheel drive. Are there other years that will work for my explorer?

Is the truck a 4X4 or not? By "rear", you are referring to the differential center section? It can be replaced regardless of the truck type. 2002 thru 2005 are alike. impish
Impish......It's not a 4x4, and I am referring to the center diff section....I think. It's the part right in the middle of the axle, that hub I believe. I was told I needed to find the number underneath that hub, as the correct replacement.
