I was wanting to do an engine swap in my 95 Ford Bronco. The motor I have is controlled by an OBD I computer, but the one I want is controlled by an OBD II. Even if the OBD I conputer would work, I would prefer the OBD II for the programming capabilities. I was wanting to know if anyone has done an OBD I to an OBD II conversion. If anyone knows something on this conversion, or what it would involve, any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
It would involve taking the computer and all the wires and sensors from the host vehicle. Also things that can be a pain are speed sensors and safety stuff..
Well I haven't thoroughy researched this theory, but I was thinking that the computer would plug into all the existing wires for the OBD I computer. I do not think Ford would completely change everything because that just wouldn't be a very cost effective approach. You would think they would try to adapt their new technologies so they would match up with what they already produced for the OBD I to save time and money. You could be right, since I haven't check up on it yet, but you would assume that it would be compatable.
When they went to OBD2, the computer plug went from a 60 pin to a 120 pin because of all the extra sensors and stuff. It can be done but you probably have to change out the complete wiring.
I knew about the 96's being changed, I just never even thought about it. I since I have a 95 OBD I, I would have to atleast change all the wiring to the 96 harnesses. Okay, well if all this is true, what about swapping an engine that comes from a later model truck, with OBD II, in the bronco. What would make this possibly? I thought I would only change the computer and plug it in to my existing harnesses, but what would it take. Any information regarding this would be appreciated.
I haven't ventured here before but, I would think you need to take the comp, harness and the eng and trans. The 2nd gen is using 4 O2 sensors now, they have crank and cam sensors, all of the fuel vapor equipt and sensors, the EGR's now are set up to measure actual flow instead of just valve opening. I believe they are still " stand alone" computers to where they only control eng and trans functions but there is just a lot more things being monitored and controlled.
