Hey guys,
We are confirming today but I wanted to get a thread up about options (if any) on ways to replace the rear main seal. Truck is leaking, only when running, right at the inspection plate. Rest of the motor is literally bone dry but in talking with Jarrett, we are going to check the gallery plugs and stuff at the back of the heads to make sure nothing is running down the back.
If it is the rear main seal, are there options, other than pulling the engine to replace it? What is the best way?
I had a plan that if i was going to have to pull the engine, i would do a lot of upgrading and replacing.....but wasn't expecting that to be now!! We just got done rebuilding the front axle and replacing the steering gear and all PS components.
You can drop the transmission and get it. I found my galley plugs to be about half way tight. Orings were original on 3 and one was the updated design. I bought a rear main to put on once the engine is back in the truck but am pretty sure it was the plugs leaking after having them out and doing a clean.

Truck is a 97 F350 with about 158K on it
Thanks!
Are you sure its the rear main and not coming from the valley? Its often confused for the rear main when likely its something on top leaking down.
in two years, maybe one post here was an actual main seal gone, all of them were other types of leaks
clean it good
cover in talcum powder or flour
aim for the wet spots
What he said...considering age and mileage - you probably have some worn out rubber up (orings/hoses) around the fuel bowl. Could be residual fuel draining from fuel filter changes too.
I just replaced those oil gallery plugs out back with the trans out. Not sure how the driver side would be done with the trans and turbo in there. In any event, do not forget the specific thread locking fluid
