I have so much to learn, I mean I have always had Diesel Ford Trucks. I mostly kept them stock and they have always provided. I knew guys were out there making them better. The Excursion search came because of the 08' F-250 having 350,000 and rusting badly on the box and the wife's Audi Q7 not having enough room for 3 large Belgian Malinios. Once we started seeing what was available for sale I was just blown away. It took only a few trips to a couple shops around here to figure out what we wanted and needed. We searched and searched and looked at many Excursions. The day that I found Rich's Fb offering I fell face first into this truck. Now, I am hooked. I'm not sure there is much more to do to the Excursion besides take care of and Enjoy it?
In my experience, the ones that sell for around 10K (in my area) need at least another 10K+ and a few hundred hours to get them back to where they used to be. And that’s only if they are still in good enough shape to work with. It can take a lot of time to find one that you are comfortable with so be patient. It took me about 4 years to pull the trigger and make the initial purchase. Then another 3 years to finish the final project I had envisioned.
The 6.0L Excursions are getting just as tough to weed through. Even harder when you consider trying to find one that hasn’t puked coolant or have possible head damage.
But there are some good ones out there still. There is one 7.3L in California that an older couple have had since it was new. Around 120,000 miles IIRC, but they haven’t committed to listing it yet. I don’t know them personally but a friend does. I’ll be sure to post about it when or if they decide to sell.
These Excursions hold their value exceptionally well. After driving mine for over 7 years and taking it from 135K miles to a little over 200K, I sold it almost two years ago for $800 more than I had paid for it 7 years earlier. Albeit, I replaced two leather seat bottoms, did a few reliability mods, upgraded the alternator, but otherwise really had no major investment into it... just kept it clean and in great shape.
Riches was nice. If I remember right he updated the whole inside. Just look at the list of upgrades to the engine. Don't know what you paid for it, but you got a good one.
That is a really nice Excursion. I know it's already sold and there's no way I will get it now, and besides I don't even NEED one, and I never even knew it was up for sale, but for some reason I keep clicking on the thread to look at it. I am a sick, sick man.
It only had 425k miles...., and a couple oil leaks, oil and/or fuel in coolant, steering leak, trashed interior, two broken windows, bald tires, blown shocks, sticking injectors..... An absolute gem!
What did you choose as an upgrade for your alternator?
Thanks!
since my Excursion was a power hog compared to our F-250 with the same alternator. two fans compared to one, a bigger a/c Unit and mor power hogs sitting in the seats. I upgraded to the DC Power alternator. Much better voltage at idle with the a/c and everything else pullingdown on the system at low rpm‘s.
