Differential covers

what diff covers do you recommend for my 2017 F 350 6.7? I tow a 16000 lbs. fifth wheel, and, in all my towing through the years, the only trouble I’ve had with my tow vehicles is the rear differential overheating. I’m just trying to be on the safe side, so I’m looking for one that might hold a little more fluid and have some better cooling qualities than stock. Any thoughts?

I've used the Mag-Hytec covers in the past, but plan on going with the OUO cover once it's completed for the M275 axle.

I would like a diff cover that had temperature sensor in it. I assume the truck does not have one buried in it already.

This graphic was posted on the forum a few months back showing that the extra capacity differential covers may not allow the differential fluid to flow up to the top of the differential. While it may be a pessimistic view of competitor's covers, it did make me rethink the need for an aftermarket differential cover.

So One Up is saying larger capacity may lower temps but might prevent adequate lubrication. But they think their cover enhances lubrication. They don’t have one for my truck, though. I really wonder how accurate the thought is. It’s one of those things that makes sense but is beyond me to determine its validity.

If I really get concerned about it I'll grab my infrared temperature probe and check the temperature on the outside of the differential cover when I get to the top of a pass while pulling my toy hauler. Then I'll check to see what temperature range the Mobile1 gear oil can handle.

If you tow much you really should keep a temp gun in the truck. I carry one ( I have several because I use them for work regularly) and use it at every fuel stop. A simple walk around while the fuel is going in to check tire temps on the truck and trailer, wheel bearing temps on the trailer and occasionally the rear diff cover. Typical summertime tows generate tire and wheel bearing temps from 100 to 125 degrees. Wheel bearings should be about the same and the diff cover, depending on load will be between 160 and 200 degrees.

I am at ~25k GCVW with a 16k 5th wheel. Truck is rated for 28k GCWR in F-350 SRW 6.7 trim. Therefore your over 10% under rated GCWR...there is a reason these trucks no longer run 10.5" sterlings. Why waste your money?
