Hey all,
I am home visiting my folks for the weekend, and they bought a cd player for their 96 explorer. It does not have the premium sound package. I bought the harness but, when i went to install, the one connector is correct, and the radio powers on fine using it, but the other connector on the harness isn't even close to matching. I'm assuming this one is for the speakers. The one that doesn't match is a black plug. it is sort of square, but a bit more rectangular with 9 wires going into it. I have no idea what to do now, or how to solve my problem.
Wal-Mart and others sell wiring harness adapters for less than $10. This is probably the best solution, unless you don't mind getting into the adaption yourself. It is possible, provided that you are slightly, electro-mechanically adept.
There are two different harnesses for that explorer. One if you have an Amp and one if you do not. Stop by any local stereo store worth a #$*& and they can take care of you!
99% of ALL Explorers have a seperate amplifier. This amp is usually located in the passenger side rear wheel well. You can bypass this with a harness adapter(I believe that BestHarness calls this a BHA5600?). Or you can use this factory amp using a device called an "Add-a-Head" by Peripheral. Either of these will be available at a 12V shop that does installation. These are really the only good options, short of rewiring all the speaker locations.
