I have a 2000 f450 7.3. recently while driving I noticed some smoke billowing out of the dash and the wiring harness coming from the headlight on off switch was melting. it has no lights now but the directional and brake lights work.
i see where the wires meet up and go to the firewall and meet up with more wires, I'm wondering g how to fix this, is it common and it has no cruise control. thank you
Happened to me with an outboard. Wire caught between boat and pushrod for steering and it shorted and cooked the wires.
could be your wires got pinched or a mouse chewed them.
got this and cut the pig tail off for ten bucks. gonna try to go wire to wire and see if she lights up. no idea where it grounded out. was hoping a fuse would blow before the fire but no
so this is the fuse. got the whole dash off and replaced the pig tail and light switch. running lights come on but no headlights im stumped. don' know where I'm goin now
ok! I got the headlights to come on!!! unfortunately the wires started smoking again. the same two that started it all. they are the two brown main headlight wired. I'm thinking a ground issue?? any info wouldhelp im not an electrician
Have you checked the fuses to insure they are the correct amp rating? More than 1/2 of mine were wrong, I replaced them all with new fuses. Are they smoking with the switch on or off or both? Any deformation of the switch that would indicate the switch is shorted?
A lot of times all you can do is trace the burned wire to the point where it is not burned. That will be your short to ground. I have also had to connect wires and let them heat up and feel my way along to find the short. Since it seems to be headlight wiring does it smoke on both high and low beams? Did the wiring smoke through the dimmer switch? If so that may be your issue.
Personally I would disconnect headlight wiring and inspect it where it goes through radiator support. Good luck with your hunt.
What are the wires with the splices on them? Are those new splices that you added for the new wiring harness? If they are old splices I would verify the headlight wiring all the way back to the headlights. If new splices then like Fefanatic stated I would start looking at the wiring going to the headlights. Start at the headlights and work your way back until you find something that isn't right and you will have found your problem.
i found this, I did not disconnect it but found it like this, doesnt go to my blower and was an old aftermarket radio put in. would it go to a stock radio? the wires go to the same place so im thinking this could be it
