Why dont you add a pressure switch ( AKA brake lamp switch) to the brake line and wire it up so the engine won't start unless your foot is on the brake. At least, if the vehicle is in gear when it starts, the truck won't go anywhere until you take your foot off the brake.

Just a thought
Thanks
Dan

I would put a factory switch back on the trans , and it should be simple to make a lever to fit the trans for the shifter arm .
Another option would be use a Dakota digital shift indicator , as it also has the neutral switch built into it .

This is a great idea! I would look at running a wire from the brake light terminal on the brake light switch to a relay then run your IGN key start wiring through the relay contacts. Pressing on the brakes completes the circuit to the start soleniod relay on the firewall. However you do it its an important safety device. I had seen a close call one time with at a show where the truck died as it was driving away. The guy restarts it and revs it up the transmission was still in gear and the truck launchs and he almost hit an elderly lady walking 20 feet in front of him.

Dan, that's the best idea and the simplest I've seen yet. Gonna look at that this p.m.

John, did you look at the kit Lokar has ,I know the C-4 C-6 is not listed but to me it looks as though it could be made to work. What are you using as an indicator to display what gear you are in.

or this may be another option regarding the use of your indicator

I don't see why you can't remove the lokar part and make a new lever to suit , then weld it to what's left of the lever that's been cut off .
Then re fit an inhibitor switch as per factory ?

Hi,
Maybe I’m completely missing the whole picture here but If I was you I’d just build a bracket that bolts to the transmission then install a switch where the lever is in park position. Wire it in series and at least it won’t start unless in Park.
The first picture is a neutral safety switch from a corvette, something like that might work. The second picture is American shifter universal neutral switch. The third picture is the lokar universal switch. Personally I’d just buy a switch and make my own bracket..... but that’s mostly because I’m broke.
Hope one of those options work for you.
zac

X2 on the Dakota Digital Gear Shift Position Sensor. It handles NSS and Back-up lighting in addition to the Gear Shift Position Sensor input for Dakota Digital gauges and stand alone indicators. It comes with all the hardware to attach to your trans. I've installed them on a 700R4 and a 4L60E with great results. It cost about $99 for everything. It interfaces directly with DD VFX and HDX gauges for the gear shift position output.

That looks the same as the Lokar unit.

just ordered that set Pete... gives me everything I need... but you also have to order a gear indicator display, which bumps the price up some...
