I am about to buy a 2004 V10, its been cared for very well. Sans cigarette burns in the seats..
Brakes feel weak. First what brake upgrades have you done. I am looking at the pads of course and drilled vented rotors. I did that on a 02 S10 and its awesome. So My thoughts are brakes with the same style rotors, braided hoses, new caliper and the ceramic pads. will be great.
Next is the coil packs, typical intermittent miss, so I am sure the coil packs need replaced. Which ones have you folks been happy with?
Anything else I should be looking at?
My younger brother has an 06 almost like it and 140,000 and he pulls two spray tanks with 500 gallons each of lawn chemicals. daily,, he has always had a ball hitch pulling something.
Iam finally in the position not not worry much about cost of upgrades. What else would you recommend. Never ever tell me you should have gotten a diesel.
My plans are to pull a mediu, sized boat form the Ozarks to the Gulf of Mexico once every six weeks.
Grats. Since you're talking about towing I assume you've got either an F250 or F350? Just asking because there's quite a few van folks around too.
Most guys here will suggest replacing boots first, then plugs, then cops to cover misfires. If you've got the budget, get your battery checked/replaced and alternator as well. The v10 platform is finicky about voltage.
Fuel filter, air filter, MAF cleaned. Brakes on my 08 F350 aren't an issue, not sure if there was an upgrade somewhere along the way or maybe you just need better pads?
I think the most common upgrade mentioned here is gearing. There's some guys who have done superchargers and others who talk about turbos. Personally I'm happy with mine the way it is, I just want it to last me forever haha.
With that many miles and it’s very likely the brake fluid has never been flushed and having weak brakes the entire system needs going through from fluid to pads if you want to upgrade to stainless brake lines now would be the time. I have oe rotors and motorcraft severe duty pads they are the heavy duty/towing pads that ford offers as a step up from the normal replacement pad. A lot of us have had complaints about the braking of gas super duty trucks mine included actually both of the ones I’ve had weren’t great. But you can’t condemn it till you have been through the system and it’s in proper working order. My truck now stops great after every thing but the real key was the mod to the brake booster but again everything else needs to be right before this is done. As far as the misfire if you don’t know when the plugs were changed or if they ever have been plugs are almost as ingnored as brake fluid the change interval is 100k miles from ford but lots of people don’t change them. You can’t condem the coils with unknown plug codition either if they are the original plugs the are almost at double the rocomenned change interval. If they haven’t been changed then the boots are originals to and cause misfires though cracks in them. The plug to use in these motors is motorcraft the modular motors are picky about plugs and the motorcrafts work and are only $3 each no plug is going to give you any extra power no matter what they claim. When it comes to coils there are only 2 real options motorcraft or denso which makes the coils for ford are are about half the price when you buy the denso brand as opposed to motorcraft brand. I don’t think anyone here is going to tell you you should buy a diesel especially not for you use. As long as you don’t expect more than 13 mpg you won’t be disappointed in the v10. Depending on what other upgrade you thinking about I’m sure we can help just. I for sure would recommend the spd y pipe for the 04 your looking at don’t expect the mpg they claim out of it either but it did help on the low end like it claims too and for 90 bucks I was worth it.
I’ve used Powerstop brakes and been very very happy with them. Truck/tow performance kit includes pads and rotors. I recommend Rockauto for the best price.
Thank you for the good information. I made contact with an old friend from 40 years ago yesterday. I have been gone from my home town from that long. (Army etc) Anyway I went to his repair shop. He told me almost exactly what you did. He did say it is almost the back plugs or coil every time. He did explain if I wanted to do the work, he would still hook up his scanner and and we can drive it and figure out whats wrong and no charge. On the I am going to have him do the work do to my having a lot of back problems.
Sounds like a solid plan. The brakes being "weak" probably has to do with the slide pins sticking. But if you're going to be towing, yeah, start from scratch on those brakes
