Just did the Saginaw conversion on my 76 F-250 4x4. Everything went well, installation, filling and bleeding. All worked well. Now all of a sudden when I try to steer either way the pump pulley momentarily stops causing the belt to squeal. Checked belt tension, tried re-bleeding system, can't figure it out. No leaks, fluid does not have any air bubbles in it, all steering components are new, turns freely when tires are off the ground. What could be causing pump pulley to stop when turning steering wheel with truck running. Bad pump? Got the pump from CVF Racing.
Just talked to CVF who referred me to Lare's. Gentleman there gave me some instructions to try. Will get back with results in a couple hours. Seems to think spool is sticking behind high pressure line.
Well, went through the bleeding procedures a couple different ways and still having the same problem so CVF is sending out a new Saginaw pump. Will update when new pump arrives and gets installed. Here is how the set-up looks.
How many psi are the saginaw power steering pumps supposed to put out?
It'd be interested to know the difference between saginaw and C2 just for reference purposes.
Supposedly this CVF pump puts out 1500 psi. Got the new pump and am going thru the bleeding process today, slowly. Wheels up, lock to lock 20 times, 3 times so far. Bubbles are getting less each time. Let it set for 2 hours between each lock to lock. Hopefully will be done tomorrow. Can't say enough about CVF customer service. Very helpful.
Happy to say after 4 sets of lock to lock turning of steering wheel, 2 hours between each session, we have no more bubbles in fluid. Started truck and turned wheel lock to lock 7 times. Turned off truck and checked fluid. Just had to top off a little, no bubbles. Took truck for short spin and couldn't believe how nice and easy power steering is. Quiet as can be. I am a happy camper.
Hickory, is that an all encompassing kit or several parts to get it installed? I need that...sick and tired of the never ending leaks.
Hey Mark, how are you doing. Each piece is individual unless you get a serpentine kit, big money. You need Saginaw pump, Ford Saginaw bracket, 5/8 keyed pulley for said pump, and brass fitting for the Ford high pressure hose. I replaced the pencil neck pump. Of course a new belt also. Went through trial and error until I got the right belt. This all went on my FE 390. See you have been doing a little rust repair recently.
Persistence is the ticket. Glad you got it all worked out.
Me too. Now if it doesn't leak and keeps working like it is, all will be well. Been following your build also. Nice attention to detail. On a side note I have hunted your homeland 5 times. Up around Buffalo Narrows and Carswell Lake in the northwest corner.

Thank you! I keep hearing that many are following my build but it's been a silent build thread lately. I guess everyone is working on their projects?
Glad to hear you know where "Saskatchewan" is cause a lot of folks ask how close to Alberta/Calgary/Edmonton it is lol. You sure went a heck of a long ways just to hunt. Musta been a good trip to come back 5 times!

One 12pt buck, 3 bears, and one moose. Pretty good hunting up there.
