A search didn't find exactly this problem symptom. Stock .'04 6.0 with 175,000 miles. Has always run pretty much the same until the other day. Was running errands on a 50-degree day, made two stops and starts, fully warmed. Last stop, a few blocks from home, started right up, but running roughly, black smoke, wouldn't take throttle. Any throttle/load and it would try to die. I managed to idle it home and shut it down. It started right up, revved normally, drove normally. Several short and long trips since with no symptoms.. WIGO and what should I be worried about?
Which tuner/code reader is the best buy for this problem? It's about time to spend the money.
It's been four years now and it occurs so rarely and so randomly, I've been putting off dealing with it. Just today, 18-degrees, started and ran fine until fully warmed. It was idling with no apparent problem, but then wouldn't accelerate. If I kept my foot in it, clouds of noxious, everyone behind me hating diesels. If I pulled it into neutral, it would rev up, clear out and run normally.
Tuners are not the best code readers. Get the Forscan app for a smart device, then get a wireless obd adapter that will connect to it. Do a few searches, probably spend $50 for all of it.
not much is better than this except for the dealers software.
