The next buy for me is a fire extinguisher. What kind do you all have and where is a good place to mount it? I'm thinking right now to mount maybe one or two behind the rear seat as that's the only place I can see to put them. How about on either side of the bed, inside? Or would it be ok to lay them somehow behind the seat?

Fire extinguisher mounting
Smaller onces can fit on the bottom sides of the front seats. Larger ones (or smaller) can fit behind the seats. If you have a SuperCab like I do, however, it consumes valuable rear leg room. I used to have one on the floor in the front, middle. Relocated it to the back since my little brother's favorite seat was the front middle and it got in the way of his feet being there. Put a bunch of velcro on the harness, and this way I can put it wherever I need based on what kind of gear I toss in the back, what kind of seat config I want, etc. I keep an extra one in the toolbox.
You can mount one in the bed, as well, but I would worry about the winter elements fouling it -- I guess a cover would keep things clean, though. I still don't like the idea of drilling into my bed, but don't let it stop you if you're happy with that setup.

Fire extinguisher mounting
My extinguishers came with mounting brackets. Then again, I got them through a friend whose father owns a fire surpression system installation & supply company. He got me some extinguishers made specifically for vehicle mount, with metal brackets that clamp the extinguisher in. Although most of the standard wall-mount brackets that come with extinguishers these days will probably work, as long as they have a strap to hold the unit into the mount.
Cudighi.... The mounting locations listed above all work great. As for the type or rating, I would suggest a "Type C" extinguisher. That will cover Paper, wood (Type A Combustibles) Gas, oil (type-B Combustibles) and electrical fires ..ie Type-C. Halon or Co filled. Jeff in N.M....OUT
hey skeet, that called a mulit purpose or an ABC type, Cudighi, The outside will really mess with whats in the extinguisher and well if it gets hit or pushed around it may get set off. In side will be the best place.
I've got mine mounted on the floor in front of the middle front seat......no one is allowed to sit there and it's close by so I like it there. It came with the bracket:

I had mine in the same spot ad DCSpecial, but I had to let people sit in the middle. It was that or start clearing out the back seat where I had all my junk stashed. And I just don't have the heart to refuse my little bro' when he says he wants to sit in the middle. I put a few long srips of velcro all the way down the bracket, and clamped it so that the handle also touched the floor, helping to keep it in place. When needed, I can move it to an alternative location with ease.
DCSpecial -- don't know if you've ever pulled the trigger on one of these extinguishers, but they sure don't last too long at all. One of my friends put out a bonfire with mine (I could have killed him -- these things aren't cheap to recharge, and he chose to use my good metal one instead of the "el-cheepo" throw-away). It didn't even put the bonfire out fully. Now I carry the small one in the cab, and have a larger el-cheepo ABC from Home Depot in the tool box. I might want to add another small "el-cheepo" to the mix... boys & their toys...
Yes I have had to use one this size before.....a cheap red one though, not chrome. Used it to put out a fire under the hood of a '86 F-250 that we used to have. Barely had enough in it to put it out. Used one another time to put out the fire under the hood of one of our employees vehicles.....
I might add another one or two in front of the one I have.......of course they would have to all match.....
I usually carry a 10 lb. ABC extinguisher in my truck. In the crewcabs, they can be mounted behind the rear seat easily. In a supercab, I would mount them under the rear seat, where you can still get to it easily. One thing of many that I've learned in 10 years of firefighting, if you have to take an extra step to get equipment out, that's an extra minute to think about what you are doing so that you don't rush in without looking at the whole situation.
ABC, BC, purple K dry chemical fire extinguishers will not freeze (internally) if mounted outside, now if you had a water type fire extinguisher with an "A" rating it could, however you may encounter a corrosion problem if left out in the weather for long durations.
A 5-10 lb ABC multi purpose dry chemical fire extinguisher would be a good choice mounted with a vehicle bracket in a readily accessible location.
Stay away from the plastic headed fire extinguisher regardless of the brand, they have a tendency of leaking down or possible exploding due to plastic fatigue. Your not actually saving any money buying these products and your life is worth a few more bucks.
Some good names in the industry are Amerex, General, Badger, & Ansul.
Halon 1211 fire extinguishers are not being manufactured anymore due to EPA requirements with CFC's. You can however get a similar chemical known as Halotron. This chemical is not as effective as Halon 1211 but it is a clean agent chemical that leaves no residue or mess like dry chemicals, however it does not have the fire fighting capability (UL rating) of the dry chemicals of similar size and the cost of even a small one runs several hundred dollars.
